Liverpool Vs Manchester City Review 

Liverpool today faced an out of form Manchester City side at Anfield in what was the 197th meeting between both teams. Liverpool were in a good run of form before this fixture and a win was only going to heap further misery on his rival number Pep Guardiola, who is winless in six games. Liverpool under Arne Slot have been a continuation of Jurgen Klopp's legacy with the high pressing game and a little more defensive awareness being critical elements of Arne Slot's game plan. 

Starting Line Up

Liverpool were still without their injured goalkeeper Allison Becker in goal. Caoimhin Kelleher has deputized well in his absence saving a series of penalties including that of Real Madrid's Kyllian Mbappe in midweek. 

Trent Alexander Arnold returned to the starting line up in after being out with injury. Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk were anchored in the Center Back Positions respectively. 

The strike force had Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah and Luiz Diaz, the Columbian taking the lead striker's role. 

City on the other hand who have been without key players in the last few games also had their shot stopper Ederson out with an injury with Stephan Ortega his replacement. The defensive partnership of Rueben Dias and Manuel Akanji were put in place while Nathan Ake and Kyle Walker played full back left and right accordingly. 

The City midfield was without maestro Kelvin De Bryune in the starting eleven while Ikay Gundogan and Rico Lewis made it in the midfield. 

The wing was occupied by Bernado Silva, Matheus Nunes while Phil Foden was playing through the middle with Erling Haaland playing in his customary number 9 role.

Both teams seemed to play a three man front line with a traditional 4-3-3 formation when in possession and a 4-5-1 out of possession. 

The Game Itself 

Liverpool came into the game in high spirits dominating possession and it only took 12 minutes for them to break the deadlock with a good pass from the defense which found Mohamed Salah who gave a cross to Cody Gakpo to slot in goal number one. 

Liverpool had a series of chances to steer clear of a victory with Virgil Van Dijk hitting the post with a header and a few minutes later his header just went wide of the mark. 

Liverpool still in control of this one in terms of possession and chances saw Trent Alexander Arnold shoot only for his shot to graze the post and go out of play.

Manchester City are totally outplayed in the first half as referee Chris Kavanagh blows the whistle for half time. 

The game resumes without any changes by any of the managers. Manchester City are now trying to find an equaliser with a more attacking intent in the second half. Liverpool counter City with goal keeper Caoimhin Kelleher throwing the ball quicky to Andy Robertson who finds space for Cody Gakpo in a near one on one chance. His shot is blocked by the City defence. Almost!!

Liverpool's corner is taken by Trent Alexander Arnold and it finds Virgil Van Dijk again only for his header to go above the crossbar. 

53 minutes into the game. City are now passing the ball under pressure as Liverpool are pressing them restlessly. Bernado Silva is found looking as Liverpool snatch the ball with Mo Salah clear on goal. The Egyptian fires wide off the goal. 

71st mins Liverpool make a double substitution as goal scorer Cody Gakpo and Trent Alexander Arnold make way for Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah 

Manchester City loose possession of the ball in a goal scoring area and Liverpool pick up the ball finding Luiz Diaz only for the Columbian to be brought down by Stefan Ortega in the box, referee Chris Kavanagh points the spot. Up steps Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian slots the ball into the left hand side of Stefan Ortega, who reads it but the shot is too powerful to be stopped. 2-0, 77 mins.

City bring on Kevin De Bryune to see if they can salvage anything from this one. Instant impact by Kevin De Bryune as he reads the pass from Virgil Van Dijk to the goalie. The Liverpool goalie Caoimhín Kelleher does well to save it. 

Liverpool take off Mohamed Salah and being on Curtis Jones. Luiz Diaz too comes off as the game is being rounded up. 

A huge win for Liverpool. They move 11 points clear of Manchester City.

That's 18 wins in 20 games across all competitions for Arne Slot's Liverpool. It's seven games without a win for Pep Guardiola's City and four consecutive defeats in the Premier League.

Marc Guéhi will not face any punishment for writing “I love Jesus” on a rainbow armband, with the Football Association instead set to formally contact the Crystal Palace captain and his club to remind them of its regulations about not displaying any kind of religious messages.

All Premier League clubs were given an armband for team captains to wear to promote Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which runs from 29 November to 5 December. The England defender, whose father was a minister of a local church in south-east London, added the message to his armband for his side’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Saturday.

The appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of clothing, football boots or other equipment, of any religious message is prohibited under Rule A4 of the governing body’s regulations. The FA declined to comment on whether any repeat by Guéhi could lead to a charge but it is understood that the England centre-back and Palace will be formally reminded of the rules.

Team captains are again due to wear the rainbow armband in the midweek round of matches, with Palace facing Ipswich on Tuesday night. Ipswich’s captain, Sam Morsy, was the only captain not to wear the armband at the weekend, during Ipswich’s 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest, due to his religious beliefs as a practising Muslim . The FA is understood to deem that as a matter for Morsy and his club and do not deem it as a breach of its regulations.

Ipswich said in a statement on Monday that it is planning “a range of further initiatives” around the game against Palace, including “a takeover of the stadium’s big screen in the moments prior to kick-off”.

“At the same time, we respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband due to his religious beliefs,” Ipswich’s statement added. “We will continue to grow an environment where all are valued and respected, both on and off the pitch.”

Since the Golden Boy award was created in 2003, LALIGA EA SPORTS players have lifted it more than those from any other league. Lamine Yamal is the eighth player to receive this prize while playing in LALIGA EA SPORTS. In a statement by the chairman of the Association, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji noted that the celebrant's tireless efforts to promote and develop football in Ogun State have not gone unnoticed, and he celebrates his dedication and passion.

The SWAN Chairman described the FA boss as a football talisman who dedicated his entire life to the growth of the round leather game in Ogun State and Nigeria generally.

Manchester City and Liverpool today will lock horns in a game that could have a huge impact on the title race. Liverpool have an eight point advantage over the City and could well extend it to eleven points should the game pan out correctly based on recent strides. But City who have lost five games before blowing a 3-0 advantage over Feyenoord and ending the game in a draw would be looking to boost their confidence back to life after their terrible slump in form.

Liverpool on the other side have had a good run of form under new manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman has built confidently on Jurgen Klopp’s stride by winning 17 out of 19 games. They are top of the Premier league as well as the Champions league. A win would give them a remarkable point gap at the top stretching to 11 points. City would be looking to close down this gap to 5 points as they have had a history of overturning their deficits over the years but something different this time is their number of injured key players. City’s charge for a fifth straight Premier league title could be halted by this fact.

Only three teams have ever lifted the Premier League after trailing the leaders by that many points or more – Manchester United in 1992-93 and 1995-96, and Arsenal in 1997-98

Liverpool winning would not just take them 11 above City but 9 above Arsenal who beat West Ham 5-2 yesterday. Arsenal who were top of the league for most of the days last season cannot be written off just yet so is City having won it umpteen times. The Merseyside club have won Manchester City just once in the last 9 years this could be Manchester City’s motivation. It would be interesting to see how both teams will line up for this one and who will take charge of the title race after this mouthwatering encounter.

Organisers of the Women-oriented 5KM Road Race, Ogun Women Run, Brussels Sports Management Limited are putting finishing touches to preparations for the third edition of the Race which comes up on Saturday, 7th December, 2024 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

As part of Pre-event routine, the route recce took place on Monday where sponsors and other Stakeholders were taken through the routes for the event.

Managing Director of Brussel Sports Management Limited, Mr. Seyi Johnson explained that the exercise was necessary in order for all parties involved to operate in tandem with the rules guiding road races globally.

He said "Its a tradition for us to inspect the routes and get everyone working on the project, inclined with strategic positions and what's obtainable and applicable.

"It's important for the sponsors and security operatives to have a view of what the City looks like, that gives them an insight into their own mode of operations. That has been sorted and we are already looking forward to the Big day.

"As usual, the race will get underway in Sapon, opposite First Bank, runners will navigate their ways through IBB Boulevard, through Kuto and then wrap up at the finish line inside the MKO Abiola stadium.

Mr. Seyi Johnson assured that new initiatives that will add colour and glamour have been put in place, he harped on the need for Women to keep themselves afloat in the scheme of things, adding that the Ogun Women Run is one of his own ways of empowering and celebrating Women who have in no small measure contributed to Nation building.

Meanwhile, Expo and kits pickup for the Race will begin on Wednesday, 4th December, 2024 at the MKO Abiola stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta starting from 8am daily, it will wrap up on Friday 6th December.

The Football Association told Guehi and his club that religious messaging on kit is banned after the 24-year-old's rainbow armband in Palace's draw against Newcastle United on Saturday had the message 'I love Jesus' written on it.

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy did not wear a rainbow armband again on Tuesday, after his club said he elected not to do so at the weekend because of his "religious beliefs".

Following his side's 1-0 victory at Portman Road, Palace manager Oliver Glasner appealed for "calm" about the issue.

"Everyone now is about integration, no discrimination and Marc as well," Glasner told Amazon Prime.

"We all have the same opinion. We are in sports and in sports we are always against discrimination and any kind of abuse, and Marc as well."

Glasner said he spoke to Guehi about the issue before the match, adding the England international is "not a child".

"He has his opinion and we accept and respect every opinion," added Glasner.

"This is the quote of this campaign, it's being tolerant and Marc is very tolerant so everything is fine."

Guehi's actions on Saturday risked a formal FA charge.

Rule A4 of the FA's kit and advertising regulations prohibit the "appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of clothing, football boots or other equipment of any religious message".

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his interest in Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies, TEAMtalk can reveal.

Davies has been frequently linked with United of late, given his contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire at the end of the season.

This has made him one of the most sought after left-backs in the world.

TEAMtalk has been aware for some time that the Red Devils would like to land Davies if possible.

Now, according to sources, United have taken the next step, checking in with the Canadian defender himself to gauge his interest in joining the club.

It’s after Amorim greenlit the operation, which would be a free transfer in the summer or a potential cheaper transfer in January.

Either way, United won’t overpay for players, as they wan’t to undertake cost-cutting measures, so Davies is the perfect type of player, given his status plus the fact he’ll come on the cheap.

The left-back position is a priority for United, which is another reason they are so keen on the Bayern man.

Indeed, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have both had their fair share of injury troubles, with neither man reaching 100 minutes yet this season.

That has seen the left-back position occupied by players not all too familiar with it, and Davies would rectify that if his Bayern contract is not renewed, which reports suggest is still possible.

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola are having the most turbulent time of their careers as the Spanish over thinker manager has just managed to avoid defeat once in his last seven games. City lost to Spurs in the Corabaro Cup, lost to Bournemouth 2-1 in the league, were thrashed by Sporting Lisbon in the Champions league 4-1, Brighton 2-1 in the league, Spurs 4-0 in the league as well as blowing a 3-0 lead against Feyenoord to play 3-3 before loosing to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. 

The English Champions had a good start to the season topping the table after a late VAR goal against Wolves but have since turned a bewildered team in recent times struggling to win games and defending so poorly. It is without a doubt they are feeling the absence of some key players especially the balon dor winner Rodrigo who plays as a holding midfielder but injuries to City's defense have made it even more difficult in such perilous times. 

Manchester City have had their worst run of form in over 18 years with Pep having his worst run of games in his 17 year managerial career and the Catalan is of the opinion that his team have exhausted themselves thoroughly partly the reason they are struggling 

"We have to try and win games again," Guardiola told BBC Match of the Day. "Four [defeats] in a row. We have to change things quick.

"The schedule becomes tough but it [winning games] is going to happen when the players come back."

He added: "Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it."

: "This is sport. Sport is not always sunrises. It is not always good moments.

"Today in the press conference I was asked if it was the end of the era. I know people want that. I smell it for many, many years.

"What we have done in these years, people have said it’s so difficult, but if somebody would like to beat us it is going to happen because in the next 50 years we're not going to win all the Premier Leagues. It's impossible, the Spaniard said after four straight defeats then 

Despite the lack of form of his players and having an unsteady backline Pep Guardiola has remained positive in the news conferences citing the possibility of a city bounce back which has eluded his team so far. 

“Mark my words. After this Anfield defeat… we will BUILD on that. We’re gonna be BACK, definitely. I can FEEL Guardiola told BBC 

What Next for Manchester City 

City now face a mountainous task being eleven points behind league leaders Liverpool and 5th on the Premier league log and in a season they are going to be without their midfield talisman Rodri who is injured for the rest of the season.

They are out of the Corabaro Cup and are 17th in the Champions league with one game to play to decide their qualification status. It is hard to see City having an emphatic treble season rather it is looking like it is going to be a reminiscent of Pep's first season in charge when they went trophyless and finished third in the league.

The truth is that Manchester City need a massive clear out as some players who have contributed to their successes in the last few years are now turning into liabilities as a result of age and a lack of hunger to win. The likes of Kevin De Bryune, Bernado Silva and Kyle Walker are notable name who should be shown the door as their forms are either irrevocable or their fitness levels have waned into a undeniable state. It would be nice to see if City can do some transfer business in January but that too would be unlikely as not many clubs would be willing to let go of their key men or it would mean City overpaying for them at a time they are already facing Financial Fair Play charges. 

Last season City were 8 points behind Arsenal in February but miraculously bounced backed to top the table and win a fourth consecutive title something not even the Legendary Sir Alex Ferguson was able to do. Pep has written his name in the sands of time when it comes to winning trophies and his fingers pointing to the Liverpool supporters showing his six titles is a valid point for him to avoid a sack but it doesn't deal with the reality that they are probably in their worst condition ever in seven years and a disastrous end to the season should be included in their list of possibilities.
