So I decided to travel to Igbanke with my colleague here in Edo state. I never knew there's a tribe in Edo that speaks Igbo, even though I’ve been hearing it for ages.

My first experience upon reaching Igbanke, specifically Olomua, was at a local bar where I bought bush meat and ate to my satisfaction before continuing my journey. I noticed that their king, who used to answer 'Enogie' to his name, is HRH Edobor. I was told he has changed his title to an Igbo one, 'Eze' or 'Obi' (though I couldn't verify this myself).

Before we got to Olomua, we passed through another village whose name I can't remember. I decided to interact with the people there, and I was shocked to discover that they not only speak Igbo but also bear Igbo names. A man I spoke with introduced himself as 'Ijeoma'. He spoke Igbo perfectly and kept asking if I understood what he was saying.

Curious, I asked him how the Igbanke people found themselves in Edo state since the Bini, Esans, Auchi, and Igarra cultures are quite different from the Igbankes. He explained that the Igbankes originally came from IKA in Delta, and during the slave trade and civil war saga, they fled. The creation of states during IBB’s era also separated them from their ancestral roots. Interestingly, he mentioned that the IKA people are also Igbo, having migrated from Anambra or neighboring Igbo states.

Igbanke is a small community made up of five villages that came together to establish their settlement. It’s worth noting that Samuel Ogbemudia hails from Igbanke.
