If you've been following my posts, you'd know I was posted to Umuahia North LGA of Abia State for my NYSC service. After the three-week orientation, corps members were assigned to various PPAs like ministries, private institutions, schools, and banks.

The pay varies depending on the employer, and often the state is responsible for payment. Currently, we stay at the NCCF (Nigerian Christian Corps Members Fellowship) lodge, which is well-organized but quite regimented.

On arrival at the lodge, I was exhausted and needed rest before heading to my PPA the next day. The road to the State House of Assembly is well-paved, and tricycle rides cost about ₦200–₦300 per drop. However, if you're not street-smart, you might be overcharged.

The next day, I took a tricycle to my PPA, making two stops—first at Umudike Junction and then at the UBA bank near my workplace. The trip cost me ₦1,000. I was greeted politely by the riders, especially when they realized I was a corps member.

At the PPA, I was received by the receptionist and waited a couple of hours for my employer. When he arrived, he asked me questions about my background. He explained the terms of my placement: no accommodation, no transport stipend, and a monthly salary of ₦4,500.

I quickly realized that this salary wouldn't cover rent or feeding costs. I requested to be rejected, citing the NYSC guidelines that employers should provide accommodation and welfare. After some discussions, I was officially handed a rejection letter, which I documented at the local government secretariat. It was a relief to finally be free from that placement.

Good morning everyone. I registered for NYSC in January 2024 and was posted to a camp that same month. In May, I applied for a relocation to Ogun State, but it got stuck at 60% after three weeks. My contact suggested I also apply for Lagos since Ogun was not progressing.

I applied for Lagos around June, and I was told it would be approved in about two days. However, after checking my portal, I saw no updates. My contact explained that the Ogun relocation delay affected Lagos, and both show on his dashboard. He mentioned that Batch A2 is coming to camp soon, and he plans to cancel the Ogun relocation so Lagos can be processed. This cancellation might take about three weeks after Batch A2 leaves camp in July.

My question is: with the Ogun relocation canceled, can my Lagos relocation still go through? I am eager to know if I will be able to relocate to Lagos successfully.

Participating in the NYSC Man-O-War drill was a challenging yet memorable experience. The exercises were physically demanding, and I ended up injuring my ankle, which kept me immobile for several days.

One interesting aspect was the restriction on taking personal photos. We could only take pictures with the campus photographers assigned to our platoon. Despite the restrictions, it was a unique experience.

During the camp, I made a good friend in Nonyelum Daniel. We shared similar mannerisms, and people started calling us twins. When my phone was faulty, he kindly let me use his to contact my family. His support and kindness made the tough days easier to handle.

I'm grateful for the supportive friends around me. Their presence brought warmth and made the demanding camp experience more bearable.

My journey to serve Nigeria officially began on a very eventful day. I woke up at 5:00 a.m., full of excitement and dreams. My deployment to Abia State marked a new chapter in my life, but the trip itself tested my patience and resilience.

Alongside my friend, we headed to the Peace Mass Transit park by 6:00 a.m., hoping for a smooth ride from Calabar to Abia. Unfortunately, it was far from smooth. Despite attempting to book a seat the day before, I learned that advance bookings weren’t allowed. I had to arrive early and faced a two-hour delay. The bus was chaotic, with disorganized seat allocations and luggage charges up to ₦2,000.

The journey took a dangerous turn in Cross River, where armed men posing as security officers tried to extort money from the driver. A violent confrontation ensued, injuring the driver. It took the intervention of soldiers to resolve the situation, and we were delayed for hours. When we finally arrived in Aba, the city was lively and bustling. I quickly moved to Umuahia for ₦1,500 and navigated through local dialects and haggling to reach the NYSC camp in Igbere.

Despite the chaos, I arrived safely and early at the camp. Now, on June 11th, the NYSC orientation has officially begun. The camp is filled with new corps members, and I’m already settled in. It’s been a journey of tears, laughter, and resilience. I’m proud to be here and ready to serve Nigeria.

Rita Ushie, the female corps member who became popular for complaining about Nigeria’s economic hardship and President Bola Tinubu in March, will spend two additional months in service.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended her service year by two months.

In the video, the corps member, also known as Raye, voiced her frustration with the country’s difficult economic situation and her struggles. She also condemned the Tinubu-led administration for not dealing with the economic crisis.

When the video went viral, it drew me-too experiences from fellow corps members and other Nigerians. They complained about struggling with the high cost of living while receiving lower wages.

The corps member later raised the alarm in another video, saying that NYSC officials were threatening her because of the viral clip. They wanted her to delete it.

She would later be summoned by the NYSC Local Government Inspector to appear at the Eti-Osa Local Government office, where her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) was located.

The matter drew the attention of presidential candidates Omoyele Sowore, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who condemned the attempt to suppress the corps member’s freedom of speech.

And when it seemed as though the matter had died down, she was summoned again in June.

A Tuesday report by SaharaReporters revealed that a disciplinary panel at the Iyana Ipaja NYSC orientation camp in Lagos summoned her on June 18.

Ushie was eventually informed that her service year had been extended by two months. She had one month left to complete her NYSC programme.
