Mr. Christian Aburime, Press Secretary to the governor of Anambra state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has urged the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members in the state to be committed to the challenges of developing this country.

Aburime handed down the charge when members of the Editorial and Publicity Group of the Community Development Services,CDS, of the NYSC in the state paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Government House, Awka on Tuesday.

Mr. Aburime particularly urged the NYSC members who were passing out from the mandatory one year national service not to abandon the country to any other country despite the current challenges facing the nation.

He expressed great optimism that the nation would overcome its current challenges if all the various segments of the country unite to build the country.

"I want to urge you not to leave this country despite our current challenges.

"We should be here to build this country; we should not go anywhere else", Aburime urged the NYSC members further.

He expressed gratitude to the Corps members for honouring for his "commitment to excellence" and, assured them that in his both official and private lives he would always strive for excellence.

He also pledged that as patron of the group he would always support them in all their programmes.

Earlier, in his speech the out-going president of the group, Mr. Raphael Adegbola explained to Mr. Aburime that the purpose of their visit was to thank him for the support he had been giving to the members; to formerly inform him that they were passing out from their one year mandatory national service, and to introduce the new executive of the CDS to him, as well as present an award to him as a mark of their appreciation for his support to their group.

Adegbola said "Sir, we are here to inform you that we shall be passing out from our national youth service in a few days time.

"We shall not remain NYSC members forever; our national service will end in a few days time.

"We have also come to show our appreciation to you as the patron of the CDS in Anambra state, and, for the support you have been giving us.

"We came with the new members of the CDS in the state to introduce them to you. The new president is Jerry Anietie, and, his vice-president is Chukwulobe, and, his other exco members", the outgoing CDS president told Governor Soludo's media aide further.

Highpoint of the courtesy visit was the presentation of a plaque by the group to Mr. Aburime as a mark of their honour to him.

The battle before Senator Friday Konbowei Benson, Senator Representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, had been on fire for alleged forgery of his NYSC certificate.

In a letter currently circulating on Social Media from the NYSC and signed by Okonofua K.N for on behalf of the Director-General has denied issuing the document which Senator Benson reportedly submitted to INEC to secure his senatorial seat

“belonging to Benson Friday Konbowei forwarded for verification was not issued by the NYSC. Thank you.” – Okonofua K.N

Recall that the Senator KONBOWEI FRIDAY BENSON, was arraigned on three counts bordering on forgery of his National Youth Service Corps exemption certificate No. 000256454 among others.

The counsel for the prosecution, Rubben Egwaba, had opposed his bail application during the hearing of his bail application on Thursday, 28th March, 2024. He noted that the defendant would interfere with his trial if granted bail.

He said, “While the charge was filed, the defendant (Konbowei Friday Benson) took several steps to interfere with the matter. He also wrote a lot of petitions against me to truncate the matter. We urge My Lord to refuse the application.”

Alleged Fake NYSC: The Battle Before Senator Konbowei Benson

The National Association of Nigerian Students has said it is not realistic to expect beneficiaries of the Federal Government loan scheme to begin repayment two years after the completion of the National Youth Service Corps.

It argued that less than 10 per cent of graduates get absorbed into the labour market within two years post-NYSC.

It, therefore, proposed that the repayment should begin five years after NYSC.

President of NANS, Lucky Emonele, made the call in Abuja on Monday at a public hearing on the repeal and re-enactment of 2024 Students Loans Access to Higher Education Bill 2024.

The public hearing was organised by the Senate Committee on Education and TETFUND and the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loan, Scholarship and Higher Education Financing.

Emonele commended President Bola Tinubu for responding to the request of NANS, by including its leadership as representatives of the students on the loan board.

He added that the students also commended the decision to repeal the Act to address grey areas that could hinder the success of the student loan scheme.

He said the proposed repayment period of two years post-NYSC for the loan was not realistic, saying that less than 10 per cent of Nigerian graduates get absorbed into the labour force upon completion of their NYSC.

The NANS President, therefore proposed a minimum of five years repayment duration, given the challenges of unemployment after graduation.

The NANS president also called for the provision of study grants for Nigerian students in the Act seeking to establish the Nigeria Education Loan Fund.

He also appealed that the provision of a loan scheme should not be a further reason for an arbitrary increment of school fees by the management of tertiary institutions.

He urged the National Assembly to pass a resolution that prohibits public tertiary institutions from increasing school fees in the next 10 years.

This, he said, was the only way to sustain the act when enacted.

According to him, there is also a need to make provision for grants for students, to enable them to complete or further their studies.

This, he said, would encourage more students to enroll in school and alleviate the burden that may be placed on the loans.

“If the Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, could earmark N683bn for public tertiary institutions in 2024, without requesting for payback from beneficiary institutions, Nigerian students should not be treated any differently.”

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, commended President Bola Tinubu for his passion and commitment to the education sector.

According to him, the President does not want any child of school age to be out of school, given his passion for education.

The minister said the public hearing would provide an opportunity to make further input to improve the bill for the good of Nigerian students.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Muntari Dandutse, said access to quality higher education was a pressing concern for many Nigerian students.

Dandutse said its successful implementation would unlock a brighter future for the youths and the entire nation.

“By removing financial barriers, these initiatives will enable more students to pursue higher studies, leading to a larger pool of skilled graduates who contribute to the country’s social and economic development. Increased literacy rates foster economic growth, social progress, and democratic participation.”

Earlier, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said that the legislative agenda of the 10th National Assembly would bring about tremendous improvement in the standard of living of Nigerians.

Represented by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, he commended President Tinubu for his foresight and uncommon passion for supporting the students of the country with the loan scheme.

NYSC Bonding: Ladies Should Give Men Chance To Express Themselve.

President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education to formulate necessary modalities for the inclusion of National Open University (NOUN) graduates within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) framework, particularly those within the service age bracket, as allowed by the law.

The president gave the directive during his presentation at the 13th convocation ceremony of the university on Saturday, April 13, 2024. at the University’s Convocation Arena, Jabi, Abuja.

Represented by Biodun Saliu, Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), President Tinubu also disclosed the resolution of the longstanding issue regarding the admittance of NOUN law graduates to law schools in the country.

“With the changing demographics of our great nation, the government has recognised the importance of allowing NOUN graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme. 

The president noted that the gathering was not just a celebration of the graduates’ academic successes but also highlighted the crucial role that Open and Distance Education (ODL) has in shaping the nation’s educational framework.

He therefore affirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing ODL to expand access to higher education across the nation, emphasizing that the utilization of ODL is essential for meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We will continue to do this in order to improve quality, access and affordability.

“Government is, therefore, committed through the Federal Ministry of Education and the NUC to provide the enabling environment to ensure a good delivery of this mode of education in Nigeria,” Tinubu added.

He acknowledged the challenge that many school leavers face in gaining admission to traditional universities and emphasized the necessity for enhanced research in technology at NOUN to accommodate more young school leavers and improve social safety nets for the people.

The president was pleased to note that NOUN has become a central figure in advancing the government’s commitment to achieving educational goals through ICT.

Tinubu Directs Inclusion Of National Open University Graduates In NYSC Scheme

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC Demonstration Secondary School, Calabar, Cross River State, has won the maiden Connected Development, CODE quiz and debate competition.

The competition which was part of the third phase of CODE's ongoing "Power of Voices and Fair for All" project supported by Oxfam was held on Tuesday, 12 March 2024, at the West African People's Institute, WAPI, Calabar 

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that apart from the NYSC Demonstration Secondary School, other schools involved in the competition were Government Girls Secondary School Big Qua and WAPI, all in Calabar.

Speaking to NAN in an interview, the Founder of CODE, Mr Hamzat Lawal, said as part of the project, they had established Civic Clubs in some secondary schools in the state to help instil the virtues of integrity, transparency and accountability among the children.

Lawal who was represented by Etim Effanga, CODE's Support Officer in Cross River said the whole initiative was important because they needed to catch them young if the future of the nation must be secured.

"In the next 10 to 15 years, these children will be the leaders of tomorrow and we all wish to see good leadership that is why we think it is imperative to start building the children now.

"This is just the first competition among the many that will come up, these Civic Clubs and competitions will help prepare these young ones for a better tomorrow.

"For us, we are working to have our integrity clubs in all secondary schools not just in Cross River but in all states of the Federation," he said.

Similarly, Miss Blessing Anama, a student of the NYSC Demonstration Secondary School said she felt very happy that her school won the maiden quiz and debate competition.

Anama who said she would like the competition to be regular to build accountability among students appealed to the code to ensure that many more civic clubs were established in other secondary schools in the state.

On her part, Udo Iboro from Government Girls Secondary School, Big Qua Town Calabar, noted that the competition was impactful adding that it was not easy gathering students from different schools to exchange ideas.

While appealing for the project to be expanded among schools, she said CODE could also improve on the gifts to motivate students to participate more.

Now you can give another double line spacing and start from the middle of the two corners of the foolscap sheet by providing the heading of the reasons why you are writing. For example, if you are applying for relocation, you can use the below headings in the middle of the two (2) corners of the foolscap sheet by writing:

APPLICATION FOR RELOCATION

Then start your letter by writing ”I” and providing your full names as they are in your NYSC details. Provide your “NYSC state code” and “NYSC's call-up letter numbers.” Then provide the information of the state you want to relocate from and the state you wish to relocate to.

Then provide the reasons why you wish to relocate, either on “health grounds,” “marital grounds,” or “security reasons.”

And write, “In view of the above reasons, I hope my request will be given adequate consideration.”

The lack of response from the university’s management has only intensified their concerns, leading to a sense of sluggishness in addressing their grievances.

Daniel Ashiru, representing his peers, highlighted the challenges they face due to this delay. “We are eager to contribute to the nation through NYSC, but the delay is holding us back. It’s disheartening to see our juniors from other universities move forward while we remain stagnant,” Ashiru stated.

The situation reflects broader issues within the educational system, where administrative inefficiencies can significantly impact students’ career trajectories. Despite the students’ appeals and peaceful protests, there has been no tangible response or action from the university management to expedite the process.

Konbowei Benson, the senator for Bayelsa Central, was charge for acting contrary to provisions of Penal Code Act, forgery of the NYSC exemption certificate and submitting the forged certificate to secure admission into the School of Postgraduate Studies of the Imo State University.

The senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Konbowei Benson, was arraigned before the FCT High Court in Abuja on Tuesday for allegedly forging exemption certificate of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Mr Benson, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was arraigned on a three-count charge for acting contrary to provisions of Penal Code Act, forgery of the NYSC exemption certificate and submitting the forged certificate to secure admission into the School of Postgraduate Studies of the Imo State University, Owerri.

In February, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, instituted a forgery suit against the lawmaker.

In the suit marked: CR/028/2023, the IGP specifically accused the senator of forging a document titled ‘Certificate of Exemption’ with number 000256454 and dated 4 July 2008.

Mr Benson was subsequently charged to court and was to be arraigned on 12 February at the FCT High Court in Abuja, but his absence, due to ill health, stalled the arraignment.

The senator’s counsel, Gordy Uche, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), told the court on that day that his client was “medically indisposed” and submitted a medical report to substantiate his claim.

“My lord, the defendant is medically indisposed and cannot be in court. He is on a drip. I pray the court for an adjournment. I promise to provide him at the next proceedings,” the counsel pleaded.

At the resumed proceeding on Tuesday, Mr Benson and his counsel were present.

Count one of the charges against the senator was that he acted contrary to the provisions of sections 366,156 and 158 of the Penal Code Act CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990 and was liable to punishment under Section 364 of the same Act.

Other charges are “That you, Benson Friday Konbowei, sometime in March 2014 within the jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory fraudulently used as genuine a certain document to wit: Certificate of Exemption Number 000256454 dated 4th of July 2008 signed by the Director-General, NYSC, Directorate Headquarters, Abuja to the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest election into the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in 2015 election, which you won and represented Southern Ijaw Constituency IV and the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District National Assembly election conducted on February 25, 2023, which you won and currently a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“And you also submitted four copies of the same forged NYSC certificate to gain admission into the School of Postgraduate Studies of the Imo State University, Owerri, which you then knew to be a forged document and you submitted four copies of the forged Certificate of Exemption Number 000256454 dated July 4, 2008, as a compulsory requirement to the School of Postgraduate Studies of the Imo State

University Owerri, which is a compulsory requirement to get admission into the school of postgraduate studies to study.”

Mr Benson, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges when they were read to him.

The trial judge, Christopher Oba, adjourned the case till 28 March for the commencement of trial.

To make ends meet, I took on cleaning and washing jobs, as well as tutoring children for extra income. Though my friends mocked me for my frugal lifestyle at the time, I am grateful for where I am today. Nevertheless, while I was serving, my child was in the care of my parents. Therefore, my NYSC experience was not a pleasant one, which is why I always advise women to avoid engaging in premarital sex.”

How did your friend react when you were unable to meet her standards?

At the end of each month, my mother would send me food supplies to sustain us. Additionally, I managed to have some income through a part-time job I held, the proceeds of which I used to purchase essential household items. I did my best to contribute within my means, while also ensuring my friend’s needs were met. However, as I began to realize that I was unable to participate in certain activities that required significant expenditures to save up, I started refraining from social gatherings. 

Whenever I received invitations to hang out, I would politely decline, stating that I had commitments such as attending Bible study or being preoccupied with other responsibilities. Consequently, I earned the nickname ‘stingy coco’ from some individuals who were unaware of my financial constraints, because most of them didn’t know that I was not stingy and that I was going with my plans.
