In a now-viral video, a soldier laid out the meager supplies and questioned how funds meant for their welfare were spent. His revelations have fueled public outrage and raised concerns about the treatment of troops.

On Thursday at 18:27hrs, a petroleum tanker carrying 33,000 litres of petrol exploded at Celica Junction on the new Ife Expressway in Ibadan. Eyewitnesses said the tanker lost control after its brakes failed. It hit a Prado jeep and another car before tipping over and igniting.

Fire crews from the Oyo State and Federal Fire Services arrived quickly. They used a chemical foam compound to prevent the fire from reaching a nearby NNPC station and surrounding buildings. No casualties were recorded, but the tanker, the two vehicles, and a nearby gutter suffered damage.

State Fire Service Chairman Maroof Akinwande confirmed the cause as brake failure. He praised the swift response that prevented further spread. The scene was declared safe after the joint teams extinguished the blaze.

Bayode Olugbesan, Deputy Corps Commander (Operations) of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo State, confirmed the crash. He noted that only one death had been certified initially and that further hospital follow-ups were underway to confirm the second fatality.

To tackle the problem, the FRSC uses a point-based system. Offenders accumulate demerit points on their driver’s licences. Reaching a threshold leads to licence suspension or withdrawal.

The Corps now seeks explicit power to arrest passengers involved in offences. Ogungbemide also urges stronger judicial support to ensure tougher penalties and curb recidivism.
