Pochettino Says Tottenham Deserved Chelsea’s 2016-17 Premier League Title
Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea should be stripped of the 2016-17 Premier League title and Tottenham awarded the honour retrospectively. Spurs, managed by Pochettino at the time, finished second, seven points behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea. Chelsea were fined by the Football Association and the Premier League over historical financial-rule breaches during the Roman Abramovich era. The breaches included the use of unlicensed agents and efforts to conceal aspects of transfer dealings between 2009 and 2022. Pochettino argued that Tottenham did not compete under the same conditions, noting that players including Eden Hazard, Willian, David Luiz and Nemanja Matic were involved in deals found to have breached the rules. He said Chelsea’s punishment should have included the loss of the title, while stressing that Conte’s side played well that season.
