Parent Who Borrowed ₦6 Million Questions Police Account of NYSC Abduction Rescue
I find it difficult to accept claims that Nigeria is safe when kidnapping, hunger and insecurity continue to shape daily life. President Bola Tinubu’s remark that he “enjoyed” his time in Europe, after a 28-day trip, felt insensitive to Nigerians facing high transport costs, food prices, unemployment and violent crime. The abduction of 20 prospective NYSC members travelling from Oyo to Imo on Independence Day shows the depth of the crisis. Security agencies said they intensified operations, located the kidnappers’ camp and secured the victims’ release. Police said they had no knowledge of any ransom payment. However, relatives of the victims disputed that account. They said the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million per person and that families raised money to secure their release. One parent, described as a subsistence farmer, reportedly borrowed ₦6 million and asked how he would repay it. The conflicting accounts deepen public distrust of security agencies. Beyond rescue announcements, the government must prevent kidnappings, protect travellers and provide meaningful support for families devastated by ransom payments.
