A captain was also said to have been abducted during the attack which occurred on Friday night, April 19, 2024.

It was gathered that the abducted captain identified as Adamu, was reportedly killed.

According to Daily Trust, the soldiers had left their camps at Allawa and Erena to respond to a distress call when the armed bandits ambushed them at Roro village.

The bandits were also said to have killed a hunter and two farmers as well as burnt houses, food banks and motorcycles.

Residents, who spoke to the publication on Saturday about the latest killing of soldiers, said that the incident happened around 9pm and lasted for hours.

"Six soldiers lost their lives and one volunteer hunter,” one of the residents said.

Another source, Mustapha Bassa, said the bandits, who rode on motorcycles, were shooting sporadically as they moved to the communities.

Niger State’s Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier-General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed, confirmed the incident to the Daily Trust on Saturday.

“All hands were on deck” to bring the perpetrators to book. All hands are on deck to bring the perpetrators to face the law. Government, on her own, is doing everything possible to end the insecurity issues,” he said.

The Anambra State Government has arrested a 40-year-old man, Anietie Tim, who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl.

The State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo, who made this known in a statement on Thursday, April 18, 2024, said the suspect was arrested in Onitsha after several failed attempts.

The Statement signed by Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the commissioner, said the incident happened in 2022 after which the suspect has been evading arrest through the help of some military personnel at the Barrack where he lives. 

It was further gathered that the suspect had on different occasions threatened the mother of his victim, claiming to be untouchable.

According to the statement, Mr. Tim claimed he never knew his victim was a minor, adding that she was the one that tempted him. 

“This she was able to achieve through a radio presenter resident in Onitsha Francis Pember, who volunteered to help after he was intimated of the incident,” the statement read. 

"The suspect, Anietie Tim, from Eninan AkwaIbom in his defense said he never knew his victim was an under age and went further to say that she was the one that tempted him and he responded because he's a man with blood flowing through his veins.

"Mr Tim also explained that before the incident, he was already befriending his 14 Year old victim, who, according to him, was always starved at home.

"On his part, the On Air Personality Mr Francis, thanked the state government for always fighting for the vulnerable people in the state and stated that he's rest assured that the ministry will not let the suspect go free.

"The Women Affairs Commissioner, Obinabo after questioning the suspect directed that he be handed over to the police as he will be appearing before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka to answer for his crime.

“It is important to note that the incident happened in 2022 after which the suspect has been evading arrest through the help of some military personnel at the Barrack where he lives and he had on different occasions threatened the mother of his victim claiming to be untouchable.”

new vaccine – Men5CV – recommended by the World Health
Organisation (WHO), to protect people against meningitis.
The world health body, in a statement on Friday, said that the
vaccine would protect people against five strains of
meningococcus bacteria, and described Nigeria’s feat as

The statement said that the vaccine and emergency
vaccination activities are funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance,
which funds the global meningitis vaccine stockpile and
supports lower-income countries with routine vaccination

According to the WHO, Nigeria is one of the 26 meningitis
hyper-endemic countries of Africa, situated in the area known
as the African Meningitis Belt.
It noted that in 2023, there was a 50 per cent jump in annual
meningitis cases reported across Africa.
“In Nigeria, an outbreak of Neisseria meningitidis
(meningococcus) serogroup C outbreak, led to 1,742
suspected meningitis cases, including 101 confirmed cases
and 153 deaths in seven of 36 Nigerian states, between
October 2023 and March 2024.
The states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina,
Yobe, Zamfara.
“To quell the deadly outbreak, a vaccination campaign was
undertaken on 25–28 March 2024 to initially reach more than
one million people aged 1-29 years,” it said.
The statement noted that meningitis was a serious infection
that leads to the inflammation of the membranes (meninges),
that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
“There are multiple causes of meningitis, including viral,
bacterial, fungal and parasitic pathogens.
“Symptoms often include headache, fever and stiff neck.
Bacterial meningitis is the most serious, and can also result in
septicaemia (blood poisoning). It can seriously disable or kill
within 24 hours,” the statement added.
It quoted Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, as
saying that meningitis was an old and deadly foe, adding that
the new vaccine holds the potential to change the trajectory of
the disease, preventing future outbreaks and saving many

“Nigeria’s rollout brings us one step closer to our goal of
eliminating meningitis by 2030,” Ghebreyesus said.
He said that the revolutionary new vaccine offers a powerful
shield against the five major strains of the meningococcal
bacteria – A, C, W, Y and X – in a single shot.
All five strains cause meningitis and blood poisoning.
According to him, this provides broader protection than the
current vaccine used in much of Africa, which is only effective
against the A strain.
He said that the new vaccine has the potential to significantly
reduce meningitis cases and advance progress in defeating

“This is especially important for countries like Nigeria where
multiple serogroups are prevalent.
“The new vaccine uses the same technology as the meningitis
A conjugate vaccine (MenAfriVac®), which wiped out
meningococcal A epidemics in Nigeria,” the WHO boss said.
The statement quoted Prof. Muhammad Pate, Nigeria’s
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, as saying that Northern
Nigeria, particularly the states of Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe,
were badly hit by the deadly outbreak of meningitis.
“This vaccine provides health workers with a new tool to both
stop this outbreak and also put the country on a path to
elimination,” Pate said.
According to him, Nigeria has done a lot of work preparing
health workers and the health system for the rollout of the new

I've been given antibiotics which includes Doxycycline capsules, A-Day-Kit which contains Fluconazole, Azithromycin and Secnidazole tablets and one yellow small tablets. It makes me feel sick. A businessman has died after being shot in Aba allegedly by a trigger-happy policeman.

Emmanuel Michael Okocha, from Abiriba Community in Ohafia local government area in Abia State, was travelling with his late father's apprentice on Wednesday. April 17, 2024. 

> They drove from Abriba and entered Aba through the Osisioma flyover. However, on approaching the area opposite Abayi Girl’s Secondary School, a team of police officers stopped them and asked for Mr Okocha's car documents and driver’s license, which he quickly presented to them.

> After confirming that the documents were complete, the police officer returned the documents to him and allegedly started demanding a tip.

The late Emmanuel replied to the officer that he had nothing to give him after wasting his time and started moving his car to leave the checkpoint only for another officer standing in front to turn his rifle and shoot at him without provocation, an eyewitness alleged. 

Mr. Emmanuel Michael Okocha was hit by the bullet and began shouting that he had been shot and the police team allegedly hopped into their car and drove off.

The eyewitness drove the victim to the nearby Living Word Hospital before calling his attorney who joined him at MCC Police Station where the police team and the trigger-happy officer were identified by the eyewitness. 

Meanwhile, at the hospital, doctors immediately performed surgery to save Mr Okocha's life but he succumbed to his injuries yesterday, Friday evening, April 19.

Subsequently, the Abiriba Community are demanding justice. They have called on the State Governor, Alex Otti to intervene to ensure that rogue officers in the police force and other security agencies get the message that the lives of innocent Abia State citizens must be protected without compromise.

"This ugly incident is a constant reminder that the Government needs to do more to checkmate the excesses of men and women in her Security Agencies. They should be made to understand that their job is to protect lives not to take it and firearms are only meant to be used in extreme danger to defend themselves against deadly attack.

No fewer than 16 persons were feared dead and 20 others injured when a commercial vehicle plying the Baga-Kukawa Road in the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State drove over an Improvised Explosives Device suspected to have been planted by ISWAP terrorists.

Credible military intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, that the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 17.

Although Zagazola Makama reported 10 feared dead, credible sources told The PUNCH they were no fewer than 16.

The spokesman for the 7 Division, Lt. Col. Ajemusu Jingina, said, “I will not comment on the incident, as the location falls under the jurisdiction of the Multi-National Joint Task Force, which is headquartered in Ndjamena, Chad Republic.”

However, a resident of Baga, Bukar Wakil, told The PUNCH on the phone, “We heard that the IED was planted with the intent of killing troops, but the unfortunate commercial vehicle drove over it before any military vehicle did, killing about 16 people and injuring about 20, mainly passers-by.”

“One, troops have claimed degrading Boko Haram to virtual non-existence; two, ISWAP, a rival of Boko Haram, has invaded the Chad basin, not only unleashing terror but attempting to crush Boko Haram in incessant battles for supremacy; and three, ISWAP wants to show the Nigerian military that they are very much around and are very much uncrushable.

“Until troops completely crush ISWAP, the terror group will never, in my view, allow Chad basin to rest. This explains the sporadic attacks, especially in northern Borno.”

The next three years of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, PhD, will be more eventful for Benue youths; Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Youth Mobilization and Empowerment/State Youth Leader, Hon. Mkeenem Moses FIMC, CMC, gave the assurance Friday in a message of appreciation to Benue youths for their support and patience.

He disclosed that various programmes and platforms have been outlined to empower the youths by creating opportunities for them to develop their potentials to the fullest and to become self-reliant.

Hon. Mkeenem expressed optimism that the Benue Skills profile -Empowering Benue Youths which would be officially launched by his principal will lift thousands of Benue youths out of poverty as well as provide employment opportunities for them in the day's ahead.

He therefore called on the youths, to remain patient with the Government of the day by remaining supportive and committed to the success of the Alia's administration.

Oppositions Already Wasted 1 Year Chasing Shadows

To understand why the Yoruba are the most influential and the wealthiest people in Nigeria, study how they (not the Federal Government) dealt with the so-called Yoruba Nation agitators who tried to cause havoc and chaos in Ibadan last week. 

First of all, the families of those involved publicly denounced them. In fact, one of the affected families took out an advert. That is to show you social responsibility at the family level. 

Then, the society rose against them, with community members forcing them out and pointing out their properties and hideouts to the authorities. That demonstrates social cohesion and a society with a secure moral fabric. Secessionists can only operate where there is local support. If there is no local support, they will evaporate. 

Next, the State Government did not wait for the Federal Government or their agencies. In less than a week, they had arrested all of those involved, demolished their properties and brought criminal charges against them. That is evidence of a responsible sub-national government. 

No prominent Yoruba came out to make excuses for these agitators, or sympathise with them. As a unit, they called them by their names-miscreants. They did not even call them Unknown Miscreants (nobody is unknown to the community, except the community wants to hide behind one finger). They named and shamed them! 

Now, let me ask you this question: If you are a Hausa, Fulani, Ijaw, or other prominent tribe, or even a former Nigerian leader and the Nigerian Army, will you have any hesitation in handing over ultimate power to such a people? Of course not! They deserve power because they are responsible wielders of authority, and the ship of state is safe in their hands.
