Nigeria’s New Universities: Can Access Expand Without Lowering Standards?

Nigeria’s growing demand for university education has renewed the debate over whether expanding the number of universities can happen without compromising quality. Many qualified candidates are denied admission yearly, while existing institutions often face overcrowding and inadequate facilities. The National Universities Commission recently approved 33 additional universities: seven federal, six state and 20 private institutions. Nigeria now has 328 universities, with private universities accounting for more than half of the total. Expanding access is necessary, but new institutions must be properly funded, staffed and equipped. The NUC’s quality-assurance role is crucial to ensuring that increased enrolment produces capable graduates rather than more under-resourced universities.
