Delta Commissioner Ignores CDC Poll, Violent Clashes Erupt in Otu-Ughievwen
On June 3, residents of Otu-Ughievwen in Ughelli South LGA elected Engr. Augustine Garri as chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) after he polled 10 votes to his opponents’ six and two. Tension flared when the Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development issued the official certificate to Ogedegbe Bekederemor, who had lost the vote. Bekederemor then claimed the chairmanship with the backing of state records. Opponents rejected this move, citing electoral will and Bekederemor’s non-indigene status. Supporters of Garri say the dispute quickly turned violent, with night-time gun attacks and machete assaults injuring several residents. The Ughievwen Peace and Development Forum is urging President Tinubu, Delta State Governor Oborevwori, security chiefs and other stakeholders to step in before the crisis escalates further.
