I Became a Mother at 13. Proper Sex Education Could Have Changed My Life
I was a school prefect with plans to become head girl when I became pregnant at 13. I knew very little about my body, pregnancy or contraception because sex was never something I could discuss openly at home. My parents supported me through the pregnancy and helped me give birth safely, but I lost parts of my childhood, education and church life to shame and public judgment. I later returned to school to study medicine while raising my daughter and finding ways to support us financially. Today, I am proud of how far I have come, but I do not want my survival to make teenage pregnancy look easy. Young people need honest, age-appropriate sex education, support and safe spaces to ask questions before misinformation changes their lives.
