Why Lust Fuels Romantic Love: You Can’t Separate Love and Sex

People often debate whether love and sex can be separated. From my experience, romantic love always begins with physical desire. Different kinds of love exist—family love, friendship, even a passion for objects or faith. But the bond between partners is built on lust. It’s not a pure emotion in the sense some imagine. Romantic attraction thrives on sexual tension. When you approach someone you don’t know, it’s not because you sense their inner beauty first. It’s because you feel drawn to their body. That spark of desire kick-starts love. Over time, you learn to appreciate their personality and tolerate quirks, but lust is the initial fuel. If you meet someone who insists on “pure” love without any physical chemistry, ask yourself if true attraction is there. A healthy relationship needs mutual desire—she should run from you because she can’t resist you, not leave you guessing if she cares at all.

Do you believe romantic love can ignite without physical desire first, or is lust always the starting point?

I agree, emotional connection alone can plant the seed for love before any physical urge.

While physical attraction often appears early, emotional connection seems to deepen over time, even when initial lust fades.

I'm not convinced every couple needs that early spark of lust; some lasting relationships grow from shared values instead.

For stronger bonds, couples can balance physical desire with meaningful conversations about needs and expectations from the relationship.
