Minnesota is often overlooked beside states like New York, Texas and California, yet it has plenty to offer. Officially called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, it actually has more than 11,800 lakes larger than 10 acres. Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River, is also located there. The state is home to the Mall of America in Bloomington, one of the largest shopping and entertainment centres in the United States. It has hundreds of stores, an indoor amusement park and an aquarium. Minnesota is also known for harsh winters, with temperatures sometimes falling below -30°C. Minneapolis uses enclosed skyways connecting many city blocks, allowing people to move around downtown without facing the cold outside. Beyond its scenery, Minnesota gave the world artists such as Prince and Bob Dylan, the Mayo Clinic, Post-it Notes and Rollerblades.
