Colombia Lifts Decade-Long Restrictions on Carrying Registered Firearms

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has lifted a decade-long suspension that stopped licensed gun owners from carrying their registered firearms outside their homes without extra approval. The new decree allows Colombians with valid firearm-carry permits to take their registered weapons into public spaces while their permits remain valid. Existing rules on legal gun ownership will still apply. De la Espriella said law-abiding citizens should be able to defend themselves while security agencies continue seizing illegal weapons from criminal groups. Critics, including Senator Ariel Ávila, warned that the policy could worsen insecurity and argued that protecting citizens should remain the state’s responsibility. The change could affect nearly 700,000 people who already hold legal firearm-carry permits in Colombia.
