Kano Court Sentences Tahir Tanimu to Death for 2023 Tarauni Political-Clash Killing

A Kano State High Court sitting at the Audu Bako Secretariat has sentenced Tahir Tanimu to death by hanging for the killing of Shamsu Yakubu during a political clash in Tarauni Local Government Area in 2023. Tanimu and Martins Joseph of Unguwar Uku Quarters were charged with criminal conspiracy, abetment and culpable homicide. The court heard that Yakubu was stabbed in the chest and later died from his injuries. Justice Aisha Mahmud Ibrahim convicted Tanimu after the prosecution called four witnesses. Judgment in Joseph’s case was deferred because he was a minor when the offence was committed, pending the Kano State Governor’s decision as provided by law. Yakubu’s father said he was satisfied with the judgment and believed justice had been served.

A death sentence may feel decisive, but public discussion should still avoid treating a brief report as the full story of the case.
