On June 3rd or 4th, I was invited by the Academic Staff Union of Universities at UNN, Nsukka, to deliver a lecture. As a former governor, I respect unwritten protocols. I asked my aide to contact the Enugu State governor to inform him of my visit and request help with transport and security.

There is no legal requirement for this, but it is a matter of decency and personal discipline. I have seen this practice upheld even when I hosted former President Obasanjo in Edo State. Despite our past disagreements, we accorded each other full respect.

Edo State assets belong to the office of the governor. If any public figure—myself included—visits a state-owned institution, they should notify the sitting governor. Peter Obi’s motives may be good, but he should observe this courtesy.

Informing the governor is not about seeking permission. It is about showing respect for the constitutional authority in each state.
