Jury Awards Bill Cosby’s Accuser $19.25 Million in Civil Trial
A California jury ordered Bill Cosby to pay Donna Motsinger $19.25 million after finding he drugged and sexually assaulted her more than 50 years ago. Motsinger filed her civil suit in Los Angeles Superior Court in September 2023, alleging he gave her wine and a pill that left her unconscious following a comedy show in 1972. Her lawyers told the court she woke up wearing only underwear and realized she had been raped. Cosby did not testify during the two-week trial, and his attorney has announced plans to appeal the verdict. Outside the Santa Monica courthouse, Motsinger said it took 54 years to get justice and she hopes the ruling helps other survivors. The jury also awarded punitive damages, to be determined at a later date. This follows earlier civil losses for Cosby, including a separate accuser’s lawsuit and a criminal conviction that was overturned on procedural grounds. His representatives have called the decision unjust and intend to challenge it.
