Edo Records Over 70 Child Defilement Cases in Seven Months, Says Half Involved Fathers
The Edo State Government says it recorded more than 70 cases of child defilement between January and July 2026. According to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, about 50 per cent of the reported cases allegedly involved the victims’ fathers. The commissioner said some of the affected children were between two and 10 years old. She also cited the case of a 14-year-old girl who is reportedly eight months pregnant after alleged abuse by her father. The state government said it is working to protect vulnerable residents, support survivors and strengthen social-protection programmes.
