ADC Urges INEC to Bar Openly Partisan Academics From 2027 Election Roles
The African Democratic Congress has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to review the use of politically exposed academics as returning and collation officers for the 2027 general elections. The party cited reports that more than 600 senior lecturers at public universities in Northern Nigeria endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election. It said academics who publicly support a candidate should not later oversee result collation or declare winners in an election involving that candidate. The ADC urged INEC to publish clear disqualification criteria for prospective election officials with open political affiliations. It also called for the early publication of proposed returning and collation officers so political parties and the public can raise conflict-of-interest concerns.
