Protesters Gather at St Faith Cathedral as Awka Anglican Diocese Dispute Deepens
Protesters gathered outside the Cathedral Church of St. Faith in Awka on Wednesday as clergy and their wives met with the newly appointed Supervising Bishop of Awka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor. The meeting followed a directive by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria placing the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, on six months’ compulsory leave. Ezeofor was appointed to supervise the diocese and coordinate the province during the period. Videos from the scene showed protesters chanting songs about peace and love outside the cathedral gate. Their placard messages and specific demands were not clear. Security personnel were deployed around the premises amid tension over the leadership dispute. The Awka Diocesan Board has rejected Ezeofor’s appointment and maintains that Ibezim should remain in office, while related court cases are still pending.
