Why Nigeria’s Security Summits Keep Producing Reports Instead of Results
Nigeria has held repeated security summits as kidnapping, banditry, insurgency and attacks on rural communities continue. The Senate’s planned October 2026 national security summit was postponed indefinitely after the Nigerian Air Force crash in Ondo State that killed 25 officers and crew members. Past meetings have produced detailed proposals on intelligence sharing, police training, highway surveillance, local security committees, equipment and arms control. Yet security experts have questioned why fresh summits are held when earlier recommendations have not been fully implemented. A 2023 study cited by analysts found that only 15% of recommendations from legislative-led security conferences since 2011 had been implemented. Many reportedly stalled because of poor coordination, lack of executive action or changing circumstances. The National Assembly could make future summits more useful by publishing a public register of past recommendations, responsible agencies, budgets, deadlines and implementation status. Without clear accountability, another security communiqué may do little to improve the safety Nigerians experience ყოველდღે.
