It’s Not Fair, Wike Must Know He’s Fighting Rivers People, Not Fubara – Annkio Briggs Says

Nigerian environmentalist and human rights activist, Annkio Briggs has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike to sheath his swords in the political scuffle between him and the Governor of Rivers State.

Briggs in a recent interview said it is important for Wike to understand the political crisis between him and the incumbent governor is affecting the people of Rivers.

According to Briggs, Wike’s actions and utterances since the political crisis started in the state is unfair to the people whom he has sworn to serve and defend.

She said, “Who is he fighting? It’s Rivers people and it’s not fair. It is most unfair, even he himself has agreed and acknowledged, when it comes to somebody like me, that I supported him and that support was freely given.

“It was freely given, even when he became the FCT minister and Dr Gumi of the North raised an objection, the late EK Clark whom the FCT minister has chosen to disrespect,” Briggs said.

She further noted that leaders and elders of the state whom the former governor had formerly attack have in one way or the other shown support for him.

Also citing incidents that emanated after Wike’s appointment as the Minister of the FCT by President Bola Tinubu, Briggs said leaders of the state and the region have always thrown their weight behind the former governor.

“Even if you don’t like his positions, you don’t have to disrespect him, he can be your grandfather, you don’t have to disrespect him. Now, even at that level, I supported him, even when Gumi opposed it, I came out and made a statement that Nyesom Wike can and does have a right to be appointed by the president to oversee the Federal Capital Territory.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja Kogi State capital has set aside an earlier ruling that restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from receiving the recall process initiated by constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The Federal High Court in a landmark judgement delivered in Lokoja on Friday affirms that the recall process is constitutionally valid and aligns with the civic rights of the constituents.

The court urged the constituents to continue exercising their rights in an orderly and peaceful manner.

The development was after the court on Thursday granted an interim injunction restraining INEC, its staff, agents, privies or assigns from receiving, accepting or acting on any petition containing signatures of members of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The court also stopped INEC from conducting any referendum upon such petition for the purpose of initiating a re-call process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria pending the determination of the Motion on Notice to the same effect.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr Tomi Coker, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, while declaring a Lassa fever outbreak in the state.

Coker explained that the index case, a 25-year-old female ‘corper’ fell sick in Ondo State, but was brought to the government’s health facility in ljebu North LGA on March 18.

She said the corps member later died the same day.

She implored members of the community to promptly report to the hospital if they notice any of the symptoms.

“Any case of febrile illness that has not responded to 48 hours use of anti-malaria or antibiotics should raise an index of suspicion for Lassa fever!

“We implore all Health facilities in Ogun state, public and private, to step up Infection Prevention and Control measures antencourage compliance by all health facility staff,” the commissioner said.

She expressed the government’s commitment to protecting the health of citizens through continuous surveillance and prompt response to infectious diseases.

“The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Rapid Response Team at ljebu North East are keeping the situation under control with enhanced surveillance and community engagement and mobilization for effective response,” she added.

Customs intercepts ‘undeclared $193,000′ hidden in yoghurt carton at Abuja airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says its operatives intercepted an undeclared $193,000 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In a statement on Friday, Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS spokesperson, said the undeclared currency was concealed inside a carton of yoghurt.

Maiwada noted that the passenger arrived in Nigeria on an Ethiopian Airlines flight, No. 951, from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

He said the undeclared funds violated the Anti-Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, which require travellers carrying over $10,000 or equivalent in negotiable instruments to declare it upon arrival or departure.

“Acting on intelligence, customs officers conducted a detailed inspection, leading to the discovery of the concealed cash,” the statement reads.

“The seized money has been formally handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“As required by law, we are handing over the forfeited funds to the EFCC for further necessary action.”

Maiwada reiterated the NCS commitment to enforcing financial regulations and preventing illicit financial flows across Nigeria’s borders.

He urged travellers to comply with the legal requirement to declare any cash or negotiable instruments exceeding the approved threshold when entering or leaving the country.

1. His mismanagement of the economy and encouraging his appointees, through his silence, to blame it on his predecessor (PMB).
2. His meddling in the Lagos Assembly leadership tussle that resulted in returning a speaker that was validly removed.
3. His undemocratic removal of Rivers state governor and the elected reps there, just to ensure that Wike has the final say. He could, and should have allowed Fubara to be impeached if he could not mediate properly. That would have been democratic and heaven will not fall had Fubara been impeached.
4. The revelation that the NASS members were bribed to support his military-styled removal of a sitting governor - something he had vehemently condemned in the past!
5. His son's involvement in how the country is governed.

I can go on and on. He is becoming a tyrant and he may easily destroy what is left of our democracy.

He is another disappointment. Seems all of them are, sadly so.

> Charles Preye Zuofa, a classmate of Senate President Godswill Akpabio at Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, has disclosed that Nigeria’s number three citizen was a comedian back in school. 

Zuofa revealed that Akpabio was fondly called “Goddy A” because of his sense of humour and intelligence.

He also dismissed the allegation of sexual harassment levelled against the senate president by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying for over 50 years he has related with Akpabio, he has never seen him molesting any woman.

He also stated that as senior prefect at the Federal Government College, Akpabio never molested any woman, whether in or outside the school.

He said he was present at the guided tour of Akpabio’s House in Uyo, where Natasha claimed that the Senate President made some improper comments about her.

He said unless proven in court, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations and the one made earlier by a former Interim Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Joy Nunueh, were strange.

He said: “Goddy A as we used to call him back then in FGC, Port Harcourt was a very intelligent, yet humorous student. Before stand-up comedy became popular in Nigeria, ‘Gody A’ was a stand-up comedian. He contested I think in our 4th year and won the best DJ and stand-up comedian of the school; it was thereafter that we coined and gave him the nickname ‘Goddy A’.

“The Senate President was someone who made light of what would ordinarily pass for serious situations. He always cracked jokes to make everyone feel comfortable in his presence. The Senate President even in his humorous nature was a serious minded, studious and intelligent student who exhibited high level leadership qualities.

“He was our Senior Prefect and, you know to be Senior Prefect you must be a well-rounded individual who embodies leadership, responsibility, integrity, and strong interpersonal skills. As Senior Prefect, Godswill Akpabio played a crucial role in maintaining order, fostering a positive school environment, and serving as a role model for the entire student body.

“Am not surprised that the high-quality leadership traits he exhibited back then, has now catapulted him to the leadership of the legislative arm of the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

Zuofa said after their FGC years, he still maintained close relationship and contact with the Senate President and was part of many public engagements, celebrations and receptions involving Akpabio.

“A documentary was made to celebrate Godswill Akpabio at 50. I spoke on behalf of his friends in the documentary. I was also present at his 59th birthday held in Uyo. I was further present at his 61st birthday and well attended triumphant homecoming held at the world renowned Godswill Akpabio Stadium. My presence and active involvement at the organization of these milestone events underscore the durability and depth of our relationship”, he said.

A bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to provide for the office of the Prime Minister as head of government and the office of President as head of state and to provide for a framework for the mode of election to the said offices, has passed second reading in the House of Representatives, News360 Nigeria reports. 

It is among 32 Constitution amendment bills that scaled second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Also among the bills is a bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to provide for specific seats for women in the national assembly and state houses of assembly.

Another is a bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to reduce the lengthy period for determination of pre-election petition matters and provide for the establishment of pre-election tribunals for pre-election matters and regulate the process of suspending a member of the national assembly from legislative duties.

A bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to review the requirements that qualifies persons to be elected as president and vice-president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, governors and deputy governor, passed second reading as well.

A bill for an act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to review the status of the Federal Capital Territory as regards the election of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and bills for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State also passed second reading.

This brings the total number of Constitution Amendment Bills passed so far through second reading to 113.

A former aide to Francis Nwifuru, Ebonyi State Governor, has been suspended by the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, over alleged cult-related activities.

Ebonyi Federal University Suspends Governor Nwifuru’s Former Aide For Cult-Related Activities 

A former aide to Francis Nwifuru, Ebonyi State Governor, has been suspended by the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, over alleged cult-related activities.

The suspended student, Felix Okemini, previously served as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security (Ebonyi North) before he was relieved of his position on Tuesday after he was pictured wearing an insignia suspected to belong to a secret cult during the university’s matriculation. 

Okemini, was recently admitted to study Political Science.

The image, which circulated on social media, sparked outrage, leading to calls for his removal from both the government and the institution.

Nwifuru, through the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezuruike, announced Okemini’s dismissal earlier in the week.

Following the controversy, the university, in a letter signed by its Registrar, Dr. Ifeanyi Igwe, on Friday, suspended him indefinitely, citing a breach of the matriculation oath.

The letter read, “The Vice-Chancellor has considered the report on the allegation of cult-related behaviour levelled against you based on the display of cultism as shown on March 14, 2025, during the matriculation ceremony of the university.

“You are hereby informed of your matriculation oath and the fact that cultism and cult-related activities are unacceptable and against the rules and regulations governing students’ activities in the university as well as a security and moral threat to the University Community.

“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has directed that you be suspended indefinitely from the university pending the outcome of the investigation of this matter by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee of the university.

“You are, by this letter, hereby suspended from the university. This letter conveys the Vice-Chancellor’s directive.”

Ebonyi Federal University Suspends Governor Nwifuru’s Former Aide For Cult-relat

> The Federal Government has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to mark the 2025 Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims across the country on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast and urged them to embrace the virtues of self-discipline, compassion, generosity, and peace.

He underscored the importance of love, forgiveness, and solidarity in fostering a harmonious society and encouraged citizens to celebrate the occasion safely and responsibly.

“Dr. Tunji-Ojo also encouraged citizens to celebrate safely and responsibly, while remembering the less privileged through acts of kindness and charity, in keeping with the true spirit of Ramadan and Eid,” the statement read.

“On behalf of the Federal Government, he extended heartfelt Eid Mubarak wishes to all Muslim faithful and prayed that the blessings of the season bring happiness, success, and fulfillment to everyone,” the statement added.

Pope Francis has been discharged from Gemelli Hospital in Rome after a five-week stay that included two life-threatening health episodes, according to his doctors. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14, appeared at his hospital window on Sunday to greet and bless the crowds before leaving for the Vatican.

Though not fully recovered, Pope Francis’ doctors confirmed that he no longer has pneumonia and remains alert and oriented. They recommend at least two months of rest before he resumes full responsibilities.

The news of his discharge was met with joy in Rome and beyond. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri described it as “a great gift to the city and the world,” while crowds gathered outside the hospital to catch a glimpse of the Pope. Many were moved to tears, including visitors from as far as Brazil and the United States.

The Pope has faced several health challenges throughout his life, including the removal of part of his lung at age 21, which makes him more vulnerable to infections. Despite these setbacks, he has remained dedicated to his mission as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church for the past 12 years.
