South-East Governors and the Push for an Igbo Presidency in 2027

I believe South-East governors have repeatedly failed to unite behind the region’s chances of producing Nigeria’s president. In 2023, the late Rotimi Akeredolu called Southern governors to support a Southern presidency, yet South-East leaders did not present a common position behind an Igbo candidate. Some South-East political figures also aligned with the G5 during the election period, a move I see as weakening the region’s bargaining power. Meanwhile, South-West governors appear more united behind President Bola Tinubu ahead of 2027. I worry that waiting for power to return to the South-East after another Northern presidency could further delay the region’s opportunity. In my view, South-East leaders need stronger political strategy, unity and a clear long-term plan.
