Drug Dosage Forms: Solid, Semi-Solid, Liquid and Gaseous
A drug dosage form is the physical form in which a medicine is produced and intended for use. Dosage forms fall into four broad categories: solid, semi-solid, liquid and gaseous. Solid forms include tablets, capsules, caplets, powders, granules and lozenges. Semi-solid forms include ointments, creams, lotions, pastes, gels, suppositories and pessaries. Liquid forms include solutions, suspensions, syrups, emulsions and elixirs. Gaseous forms include aerosols, inhalers and nebulisers. This is a brief overview; later editions will discuss each category in more detail.
