Enugu’s New Path: A Review of Governor Peter Mbah’s Reform Agenda
Governor Peter Mbah took office on May 29, 2023. He set an ambitious goal to grow Enugu’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion in eight years. He created an Ease-of-Doing-Business Council and a one-stop shop system to boost investment. His 2024 budget allocates 79% to capital projects. The administration reports over 600% growth in internally generated revenue. Major investments include 800+ km of roads, a 70 MLD water plant, and 200 CNG buses. Agriculture and industry also feature prominently. A 300,000-hectare land bank and 260 ward-based farm estates aim to drive agro-value chains. A free-trade and industrial zone is planned with private partners. On social services, 260 smart schools and Type-2 health centres are underway. The state plans free meals for 300,000 pupils and has recruited 2,500 health workers. Sustaining funding and quality execution will be the key test.
