The Cross River State government has ended roadside operations by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) after protests by commercial bus and tricycle operators over alleged harassment and steep fines.

Governor Bassey Otu directed all VIO activities to move indoors. Other agencies must stick to their statutory duties. Daily ticket rates were cut from ₦850 to ₦500 for buses and from ₦1,200 to ₦500 for tricycles, with tricycles barred from night operations.

All traffic fines now attract 50% discounts and must be paid into official government accounts. Drivers will no longer buy tickets on weekends and public holidays. The reforms take effect from March 9, and enforcement officers must wear proper uniforms and carry valid IDs.

Some drivers want a clear list of offences and fines to prevent abuse. The Road Transport Employers Association will meet to review the new directives and ensure transparent implementation.
