US Tightens Travel Advisory, Warns Against Visiting 23 Nigerian States
The US Department of State has authorised the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from the US Embassy in Abuja. It upgraded Nigeria to Level 3: Reconsider Travel and placed 23 states, including Plateau, Jigawa and Kwara, under Level 4: Do Not Travel. The advisory cites risks such as violent crime, terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest. It warns that attacks could occur in markets, places of worship, hotels and large gatherings, and notes that healthcare services remain inconsistent. Former presidential candidate Peter Obi called the move a “bad omen” that could damage investor confidence, while activist Omoyele Sowore questioned whether there are undisclosed threats. The Federal Government described the advisory as a routine precaution and stressed that the vast majority of the country remains stable. Recent bandit threats around Abuja, reports of potential attacks on critical infrastructure and the arrest of a robbery syndicate underscore elevated risks. Analysts warn that repeated travel advisories may deter foreign investors and urge improved intelligence-sharing and proactive policing to restore confidence.
