Report: Former Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Converts to Islam

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam while playing for Al-Ahli in Qatar. Reports say the 33-year-old defender recited the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, in a video that has circulated online. Ekong joined Al-Ahli in January 2026 after a spell with Saudi Arabian side Al-Khaleej. He previously played club football in the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Turkey, Italy and England, including spells at Udinese and Watford. The defender earned 83 caps and scored eight goals for Nigeria between 2015 and 2025. He was named Best Player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria finished as runners-up.
