Washington, DC Proclaims October Nigerian American Heritage Month
Washington, DC has proclaimed October 2026 as Nigerian American Heritage Month, recognising Nigerian history, culture and the contributions of Nigerian Americans to the city and the United States. The proclamation highlights Nigerian Americans’ roles in fields including medicine, science, technology, entrepreneurship, civic life, art and music. It also acknowledges the Nigerian Center for supporting Nigerian immigrants as they settle into life in the United States. The recognition was presented on October 1, during Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebrations. It comes as a congressional resolution seeking nationwide recognition of October as Nigerian Heritage Month remains under consideration. Activities are planned throughout the month, including a Nigerian American Festival scheduled for October 16 to 18 in Baltimore, Maryland.
