Nigerian Man Pleads Guilty to US Unemployment Insurance Fraud Scheme

Nigerian Man Pleads Guilty to US Unemployment Insurance Fraud Scheme

Akinpelumi Olawale Oyewusi, 60, a Nigerian national living in Hyattsville, Maryland, has pleaded guilty in the United States to wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors said Oyewusi and others used the identities and Social Security numbers of real people to file false unemployment insurance claims in Maryland, California and other states between September 2020 and March 2021. The claims reportedly contained fake employment histories and unemployment details. The group allegedly received the funds through bank-issued debit cards sent to addresses they controlled. Oyewusi was linked to at least $415,874 in losses and is said to have personally received at least $25,000. Bank records showed he withdrew about $69,000 from cards tied to fraudulent claims. Sentencing is scheduled for December 3, 2026.
