Godwin Opara, popularly known as Kabaka, was the leader and co-founder of the famous highlife band, Oriental Brothers International Band, based in Imo State. The band dominated the African music scene in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

The guitar maestro, regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in Africa, was laid to rest today in his hometown of Umuoye Imerienwe, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area, Imo State.

Kabaka’s burial was a grand occasion, attended by dignitaries from all walks of life. The burial ceremony took place at Central School, Umuoye Imerienwe, and saw a large turnout of fans, fellow musicians, and former bandmates who came to bid him farewell.

Notable attendees included Dansatch Emeka Opara, a former member of the group, and Aquila, the legendary percussionist of the defunct Oriental Brothers. Also present were former vocalists of the Kabaka International Guitar Band, OTB and Mungo Park, as well as the legendary guitarist of the Oriental Brothers, Jimmy Tony Awoma.

Members of Kabaka and His Oriental Brothers, led by Kabaka's son, Ifeanyi Kabaka, performed tribute songs to honor the deceased legend. One of the highlights of the ceremony was Ifeanyi Kabaka’s performance, where he played the guitar in a style reminiscent of his father during his heydays.

My trip to Calabar for the Christmas holiday and carnival was a rollercoaster of emotions—equal parts joy and frustration. The carnival itself was a vibrant spectacle of colors, music, and cultural displays that left me enthralled. However, my experience at a fast-food eatery along Marian Road cast a shadow on my holiday, and it’s a story that still leaves me with mixed feelings. 

On Christmas Day, I stopped by the eatery to purchase a birthday cake and some snacks. After selecting the items, I attempted to make payment. The first attempt appeared unsuccessful, so I tried again. This time, the payment went through. Later, when I checked my phone, I realized I had been debited twice. 

Hoping for an automatic reversal, I waited for a notification that never came. When I followed up with my bank, I was informed that since I had entered my PIN both times, the transaction was valid, and the money had indeed been transferred to the eatery's account. The bank advised me to return to the eatery for a refund. 

Despite several attempts to resolve the issue with the eatery, the money remains unpaid to date, and I’m left feeling cheated. 

In contrast, the carnival offered some solace with its lively atmosphere and festive energy. The parades, music, and sense of community were truly memorable, but the incident at the eatery left a sour note in what was otherwise a joyous holiday. 

Would I visit Calabar again? Absolutely. But next time, I’ll steer clear of that eatery and double-check every transaction

As if that wasn’t enough, another incident left me even more frustrated. I took my car to a car wash while I went shopping. When I returned, the cleaning was nearly complete. I waited for the car to be handed over, unaware that money, unknowingly left in the car by my son, had been stolen. This discovery deeply saddened him, casting a shadow over our trip back to Port Harcourt.

The journey itself was further dampened by the terrible road conditions from Odukpani to Itu, which made the return trip stressful and exhausting.

Despite these setbacks, the carnival was a highlight, filled with joy and cultural pride. However, the challenges I faced served as a reminder to remain vigilant and prepared for the unexpected during travels.

A man who police believe was brutally murdered by his 12-year-old daughter has been named by officials.

James Waldie, 55, of North Las Vegas died from stab wounds in his neck after an altercation with his child at his home on Mercury Street around 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Clark County Coroner.

Officers found Waldie inside an apartment covered in blood and lying dead on the floor at the scene, the report added.

His daughter, 12, who has not been unidentified, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of his murder with a deadly weapon, said the North Las Vegas Police Department.

She is the sole suspect in the case.

Despite reportedly suggesting to police on claims that a break-in had taken place, investigators found no evidence of “significant” physical harm to the girl or any sign of forced entry inside the home.

Earlier in December, police previously visited the apartment where the father and daughter lived after receiving reports of a runaway child and a domestic disturbance.

According to his family, the father of nine had been battling stage four cancer for four years when he was allegedly murdered, shared family in an obituary and fundraiser page.

His stepdaughter is hoping to raise money towards Waldie’s funeral costs through a GoFundMe fundraiser. One section of the blurb on that page reads: “On Friday, December 27th, our family suffered the sudden loss of our father, James Waldie, whose life was tragically taken too soon by the hands of his own daughter.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended palliative support to Student Union Government presidents across the country.

Special Adviser on Students Engagement to the President, Asefon Sunday, announced the development on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

While distributing rice to undergraduates in Abuja, Asefon said the gesture was part of the President’s support for students and the community.

He added that SUG Presidents nationwide would get their rice soon, assuring them that the food item had already arrived in Abuja.

He said, “Today, the SUG Presidents across the Federation, by God’s grace, will also receive their rice from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a man who understands the importance of students as leaders not only of tomorrow but also of today.

“The President gave them the rice, but unfortunately, the rice arrived in Abuja very late, around December 28th last year. So, this year, we thought it wise to ask them to come to Abuja so that we could personally hand over the rice to them. We selected two SUG Presidents from each zone to represent them and manage the distribution of the palliative.

“It has never happened in the history of this country that the President will reach out to stakeholders and student leaders, particularly SUG Presidents, in December. This is the first time it’s happening.”

It would be recalled that in 2024, Asefon promised that would benefit more from President Tinubu’s initiative.

“This will be a time for Nigerian youth and students to reflect and express their thoughts while engaging with the government. The students and youth of this country are now feeling the presence of the government and experiencing its impact,” he said.

> The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday cautioned Nigerians to shun corrupt practices this year (2025) and remain resolute in their fight against corruption.

According to the chairman of the commission, Ola Olukoyede, the nation’s progress and development depend on collective efforts to combat economic and financial crimes.

In his New Year message to the citizens, delivered in Abuja on Tuesday, the EFCC boss emphasised that rejecting corruption was key to improving the quality of life for all Nigerians and advancing the economy.

The anti-graft agency boss urged citizens to seize the opportunities the New Year brings to recommit to values of transparency, accountability and integrity.

“We can make any progress and development we want for our nation to happen by our support for anti-corruption initiatives.

“The new year is offering us fresh opportunities to recommit ourselves to the ideals of transparency, accountability and probity.

“The commanding heights of the economy and improvement in our lives can only be driven by our dedication to integrity and accountable conduct,” Olukoyede said.

He assured Nigerians that the EFCC was poised to surpass its achievements in 2024, while promising that the officers will remain relentless in their pursuit of justice.

“Our work is more than a vocation but a patriotic calling. We know this and will always offer our best to move the nation forward.

“2025 will be another year of bringing towers of corruption down. Our focus is set and our commitment is total,” he added.

The Oyo State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of a pastor and his wife who suspected kidnappers abducted in the state.

The police stated that the pastor and his wife, whose names were not disclosed, had travelled to a remote area for prayers when they were reportedly abducted and warned worshippers to avoid isolated locations.

The command disclosed this in an advisory statement to residents for the end-of-year celebrations, shared on its official X.com handle.

A photo of the four suspected abductors accompanied the advisory notes released on Tuesday.

In its advisory, the command stated that the pastor and his wife were abducted while praying at an isolated mountain, prompting other worshippers in the area to flee for safety.

“The command just secured an abducted pastor and his wife at the hinterland while fellowshipping on an isolated mountain, causing fellow worshippers to flee like they were possessed,” the command stated.

Youth Minister Receives Forum of National Youth Leaders of Political Parties, Assures Inclusive Governance

Minister for Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, today, received the Forum of National Youth Leaders of Political Parties in his office to discuss the action plan to tackle challenges faced by youth in Nigeria. 

The leadership of the Forum expressed their admiration for the leadership style and the open-door policy of the Minister, recognizing that the youth of Nigeria now have an important link to the government. 

The Forum also commended the Minister for successfully uniting various youth wings of political parties across Nigeria to engage in discussions on youth development and capacity building in the country. 

In his remarks, the Minister stressed the need for a new approach to governance, urging everyone to move beyond traditional political practices and party affiliations. 

“There’s a country before a party, and we must come together to support, empower, and protect the youth of this nation through the effective use of our leadership skills,” the Minister stated.

Olawande equally highlighted the importance of support from youth leaders in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda; while encouraging members of the Forum to create more opportunities for youth to thrive across the political parties.

On the upcoming National Youth Conference, the Minister assured of a wholly inclusive process, assuring the Forum of full participation of its members before, during, and after the confab.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has addressed concerns regarding his administration’s recent land revocation efforts for ground rent defaulters.

Wike said that the revocation is not motivated by an interest in acquiring valuable plots but rather by the necessity of collecting dues to fund essential infrastructure projects.

The minister, who stated that the land revocation process had been ongoing for years, affirmed that he was merely continuing the work already underway when he assumed office.

He made these known during a site visit on Tuesday to inspect several infrastructure projects, including the expansive 10-lane, 15-kilometre Apo-Wasa road, the Court of Appeal Complex in Jabi District, and the Saburi-Dei Dei road.

In response to inquiries concerning the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, whose name appeared in the list of ground rent defaulters but has denied owing any dues, Wike clarified that individuals able to substantiate their payments with receipts would not face repercussions.

Wike reiterated that the two-week grace period granted to defaulters would not be extended beyond its expiration on January 3, 2025.

“As far as I’m concerned, these actions were undertaken before we arrived. The Land Department and the AGIS generated this data from the existing system. You should have received your Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) if you’ve paid.

“Without a C of O, it implies payment has not been made. I do not want to dispute this issue, but I will say that if anyone can prove they have paid, they will be considered differently,” he said.

The minister explained that compliance with land payment obligations is crucial for generating revenue for Abuja’s development.

“These allocations were made over ten years ago, not during our tenure. Abuja relies on property taxes to facilitate development, and we must ensure that individuals comply with their obligations.

“As such, we will not extend the grace period. Once it lapses, we will reallocate those lands to those ready and willing to comply,” he added.

When questioned whether ongoing criticism from certain political factions might hinder his efforts, Wike expressed confidence in his focus.

“Distractions have never been an issue for me. I remain steadfast in my duties. Complaints are a natural part of governance; it is impossible to satisfy everyone. Nevertheless, we will continue our work regardless of the pushback, including any talk of demolitions,” he said.
