Lagos Moves to Strengthen PSP Waste Collection and Dumpsite Operations
The Lagos State Government says it is working with private waste managers to improve waste collection, transportation and disposal across the state. At a meeting with the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said better regulation, accountability and infrastructure are needed to make PSP waste services more reliable. He said operators must not use dumpsite challenges as an excuse for failing to collect residents’ waste. The government is improving access roads, drainage, operational platforms and other facilities at disposal sites. Upgrades at the Solous dumpsite are expected to ease pressure on other sites serving Alimosho, Ikotun-Ejigbo, Ayobo and nearby communities. Officials are also considering improved cost-recovery arrangements for operators, while proposing ward-level environmental officers to monitor collections, service payments and indiscriminate dumping.
