2023: How Tinubu Ended Nigeria’s Democracy

2023: How Tinubu Ended Nigeria’s Democracy

Nigeria’s democratic experiment has always relied on more than just elections. Since 2023, President Tinubu has systematically dismantled core democratic pillars—separation of powers, free speech and rule of law—while focusing solely on maintaining power. Through state capture, the APC secured a supermajority in the National Assembly and strong-armed governors by withholding federal funds and wielding agencies against dissenters. Today, any law Tinubu wants is passed unopposed, and even elected state governments bow to his will. This absolute consolidation of power stands in stark contrast to previous presidencies, where the legislature and judiciary challenged excesses. Yet despite total control, insecurity, inflation, kidnappings and poverty have only deepened under this administration. The cure for this crisis lies with citizens. Nigerians must engage fiercely in politics—study candidates, get their PVCs and vote for leaders ready to restore checks and balances and revive our democracy.

It's interesting to see how state capture can quietly undermine separation of powers without overt declarations or new laws.
