Conduct election to replace sacked pro-Wike lawmakers – Damagun tells INEC.

In an apparent move against pro-Wike rivers lawmakers, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Damagun, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a bye election to fill up their seats, following their defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Damagun’s request was contained in a letter he addressed to INEC. The Certified True Copy of the letter is dated 13th November, 2024.

The spokesperson of the Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, Ikenga Ugochinyere made the letter available to journalists at a press conference in Akokwa, Imo State, on Sunday.

The letter is titled, “DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE CONDUCT OF FRESH ELECTION IN 27 STATE CONSTITUENCIES OF RIVERS STATE WHICH HAVE BECOME VACANT PURSUANT TO SECTION 109(1)(g) OF THE CONSTITUTION”.

It drew the Commission’s attention to the “unlawful” defection of 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on December 11, 2023.

According to the letter, going by provisions of the Constitution, the lawmakers are no longer members of Assembly.

The PDP acting chairman therefore urged the Commission to performs its constitutional duties and begin the process of conducting fresh elections to fill the vacancies created in the 27 state constituencies by the unlawful act of the former Assembly members.

Parts of the letter read, “The Leadership of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wishes to draw the attention of the Commission to the gross violation of Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) by 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly following their unlawful defection from our Party, the PDP who sponsored their elections to the All Progressive Congress (APC) on Monday, December 11, 2023.

“The Commission may recall that our Party, the PDP nominated all our 32 State House of Assembly candidates in Rivers State for the 2023 General Election on the 7th of July 2022 via your electronic candidate election nomination portal (See attached acknowledgement).

“The Commission may also recall that following the nomination, the Commission conducted election into the Rivers State House of Assembly on the 18th of March, 2023 and our Party won 32 seats in the state Assembly. The elected State House of Assembly members were inaugurated and sworn-in on June, 2023.

“However, on Monday, 11 December, 2023 a period of just six (6) months after inauguration, 27 out of the 32 members publicly announced their defection from our Party to the All Progressive Congress (APC). This defection is a gross violation of Section 109(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As amended).

“The only two grounds of division and merger provided for in the Constitution that permit such defection is completely non-existent in our political Party. It therefore means that the defections of the 27 members are without lawful excuse and these members have vacated their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly by the operations of Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution.

“In view of the foregoing, we hereby demand that the Commission performs its constitutional duties and begin the process of conducting a Fresh Election to fill the vacancies created in the 27 State Constituencies by the unlawful act of the Assembly members. Find attached the list of the 27 State Assembly Members and their Constituencies.

“While thanking the Commission for its commitment to deepening democracy in our country, please accept the assurances of our highest regards.”

Hezbollah Rockets Strike Israel, Targeting Strategic Locations

Hezbollah has continued its rocket barrage on Israel, striking key strategic areas including Haifa and other northern cities. According to the Israeli military, hundreds of rockets were launched into the region over the past few hours, overwhelming the country's air defense systems. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that only three out of the 21 local government areas (LGAs) in Anambra State are free from open defecation.

The LGAs—Aguata, Anambra East, and Nnewi North—hold this distinction, with Aguata and Anambra East classified as semi-urban, while Nnewi North is urban.

However, investigations reveal that open defecation remains a significant challenge in areas such as Onitsha South (Upper Iweka axis), Ogbaru (Okpoko and surrounding communities), Anambra West, Ayamelum, and Awka North.

During a media briefing to mark World Toilet Day, UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) specialist at the Enugu Field Office, Mrs. Rebecca Gabriel, emphasized that the three ODF-certified LGAs risk losing their status if they fail to maintain required standards. Conversely, she noted that other LGAs could achieve ODF certification with dedicated efforts.

Gabriel outlined the criteria for safe toilet facilities, which include proper containment, evacuation systems, and facilities for treating waste.

A[b] study by UNICEF revealed that 3% of the population in Anambra still practices open defecation, making it the second-highest rate among the five South-East states under the Enugu Field Office. Abia State recorded the lowest rate at 2%.

Dr. Olusoji Akinleye, Officer in Charge of UNICEF Field Office, Enugu, described open defecation as a significant challenge undermining health, education, and community well-being.

Other challenges include limited private sector participation, inconsistent public awareness campaigns, and insufficient engagement of religious and traditional leaders in promoting hygiene practices.

UNICEF called for increased government commitment, private sector involvement, and active community engagement to tackle open defecation and ensure healthier communities.

Then a Samaritan rescued him. No race of people was more hated by the Jewish people than the Samaritans. They were openly cursed in the synagogue and were barred from temple worship. What this Samaritan does is nothing less than incredible. He utilises all his resources—personal clothing, oil, wine, his time, animal, money, and energy—to attend to this Jewish man in the best way possible. Then he risks his life by taking the wounded man to lodging in a Jewish area. On top of it all, he pays the innkeeper for the man’s food and room for many days and promises to return and pay for anything more the man owes.

This was crucial because anyone who could not pay their bill could be sold as a slave by the innkeepers so that they could receive full payment for a debt. Jesus ends His story in these words: ‘“So which of these three do you think was neighbour to him who fell among the thieves?”’ (Luke 10:36 NKJV) No law will ever cause you to be a good neighbour, but the love of Christ will. You see, a neighbour is not identified by colour or creed; a neighbour is identified by the nearest need.

So, here is a prayer for you to pray: ‘Lord, give me the courage to recognise and help a neighbour in need.’ That’s a prayer He will answer!

Two parents in Washington allegedly tried to choke their 17-year-old daughter to death in an apparent "honor killing" attempt after she refused an arranged marriage with an older man, police said.

Ihsan Ali and his wife, Zahraa Ali, have been charged with attempted murder for the attack outside the teen's school, Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington. The father also allegedly punched his daughter's boyfriend in the face outside the school, the New York Post reports.

The daughter has not been identified, but told police that her "father had recently been threatening her with honor killing for refusing an arranged marriage with an older man in another country," the police report said.

On October 18, the girl ran away from home and sought help from staff at her high school. Her parents followed her to the school and allegedly attacked her outside the facility, where her father began choking her "to the point where she had lost consciousness."

Other students, including the girl's boyfriend, tried to pry her father off of her, according to police.

Video footage first obtained by Fox 13 Seattle showed the father choking the girl into the ground and shoving her face into the dirt while students surround him and tell him to stop. The girl's mother also allegedly tried to choke her.

Good Samaritan Josh Wagner told KOMO that he was driving by when he spotted the alleged attack occurring. He stopped and approached the scene, thinking he was going to break up a fight between teens, but found the parents allegedly attacking their daughter.

Wagner grappled with Ihsan and held him down until police arrived on scene.

“It was pretty angering. All the kids were screaming, yelling,” he told KOMO.

Once her father was off of her, the girl reportedly ran off with her boyfriend back to the school's main office while yelling that her father was trying to kill her. The incident prompted a school lockdown and school staff refused to let the girl's parents inside the building.

The state government also withdrew the letter revoking the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre issued by the last administration.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has abolished the new traditional councils created by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, in Edo South senatorial district.

The governor also restored the statutory financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) and ordered that the status quo before the creation of the now abolished councils be maintained.

This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua in Benin City.

“This administration also hereby abolishes the new traditional councils in Edo South, created by the last administration,” the statement read.

“Governor Okpebholo has restored the statutory financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) and has ordered that the status quo before the creation of the now abolished councils be maintained.”

He stated that Okpebholo also complied with the Federal Government’s directive by restoring the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin on the ownership of ancient artefacts looted by the British colonial forces during the 1897 Benin massacre.

According to Itua, the decisions were in line with the governor’s move to further right the wrongs of the immediate-past administration and foster cordial relations between the government and the people.

The state government also withdrew the letter revoking the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre issued by the last administration.

The statement noted that the Okpebholo administration is restoring the centre to a suitable condition for its original purpose.

“The Okpebholo administration is backing the initial plan of the State Government to build the Benin Royal Museum that will house the returned artefacts and is distancing itself from the Museum of West Africa Art (MOWA) which the previous administration fronted.

“The Federal Government had issued a Gazette for the recognition of ownership and custody of the repatriated Benin artefacts to Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II. This was done through a Government Notice No.25 in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette No.57, Volume 110.

“Governor Okpebholo respects the rights and privileges of the traditional ruler of Benin Kingdom, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare ll and pledges the support of his administration to ensure the Monarch plays his role as the custodian of the rich cultural heritage of the Benin people.

“It is in recognition of this that the administration of Governor Okpebholo shall support the decision of the Federal Government to uphold the Oba of Benin as the exclusive owner of the returned Benin artifacts that were looted by the British Colonial forces during the Benin masaca of 1897.

“The Oba of Benin, as the father of all Benin people, is the sole custodian of the customs and traditions of the Benin people and my administration respects customs and traditions in the land and hereby restores the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin as the true custodian of the returned Benin artefacts

“Governor Okpebholo said his administration is committed and will refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of the Benin Traditional Council

“The Governor is using his constitutional powers and the respect for traditional institutions and the revered Oba of Benin to restore all other Statutory Rights of the Monarch not mentioned hereof,” it added.

Chief Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika: Death of the Pioneer DG of F.C.T, Abuja

Foremost Nigerian Permanent Secretary and the first Director-General, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Chief Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika (Ochendo Abatete), died recently at the age of 89 and will be buried on December 6, 2024.

He was the Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, between 1991 and 1994 and served under two Ministers, General Gado Muhammadu Nasko and General Jeremiah Timbut Useni. He was the Director-General when Nigeria’s capital was moved from Lagos to Abuja in December 1991. He served as the Director-General for over three years. He significantly shaped the city’s development curve during that time, marking its beautiful horizon with enduring legacies.

Oranika was a civil servant of note whose rise to the peak of his career was not just the effort of hard work, self-motivation and discipline but also God's unmerited favour. He started as a diplomat with Nigeria’s Foreign Service until the Nigerian civil war broke out, which compelled him to transfer his service to the Eastern Region Government. On rejoining the Federal Civil Service after the war in 1970, he rose from Administrative Officer to Director-General in 1991 after 21 years. He had a reasonably impressive career progression that saw him work in several federal ministries and departments, including finance, science and technology, education, trade and commerce, industry, economic development, presidency (budget department), and the federal capital territory.

It is fair to argue that he left every office he occupied better than he met it and earned his stripes as a dedicated civil servant with a passion for excellence. He was diligent in his duties, selfless in service and reliable in conduct. But more than that, he possessed uncommon leadership qualities that spoke to an unwavering commitment to duty and a keen eye for detail. Speaking on these leadership qualities, General Gado Nasko, his boss at the FCT, said: “Oranika’s exceptional leadership qualities made him an invaluable asset to the Federal Ministry of Trade and Commerce and later the Federal Capital Territory. His dedication to duty and passion for excellence shone through his role as Director of Trade. He made me recognise his potential and advocated for his appointment as Director General of the Ministry of the FCT, despite his not meeting all the qualifications”.

Humble and with no want of civility, Oranika was never caught in any form of disputation either with colleagues, friends, mates, or family. He was mild-mannered, compassionate, and always ready to assist those who had taken a tumble and were on the wrong side of life.

Born April 30, 1935, to Mr. Evarist Oranika and Mrs. Agnes Oranika, both of blessed memory from Umuebo, Agbaja Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, G. C. Oranika started his primary school at St Dominic’s Catholic School, Abatete and completed at St Joseph’s Primary School, Onitsha. He attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, on scholarship and, upon graduation, secured a job with the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Before travelling to Scotland for higher education, he did a few-year stints with the Corporation and Bulk Oil Plants of Nigeria. He got admission to read Modern History and Moral Philosophy at St Andrew’s University, Scotland. After obtaining both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University, he proceeded to the London School of Economics, United Kingdom, for a course in Foreign Service. He worked as a diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until the outbreak of the Nigeria–Biafra War when he transferred his service to the Eastern Nigerian Government. He rejoined the services of the Federal Government immediately after the war and rose to become a permanent secretary and the first Director General of the FCT, Abuja.

A widely travelled public servant and member of national and international organisations, he was a Member of the National Institute (mni), having attended a course at the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, Jos. He was also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Directors (FCIoD) and a Paul Harris Fellow. He won many awards and was heavily decorated.

Oranika did not forget his God and was an active Roman Catholic Christian. He was a Knight of the Order of St. Mulumba and Knight of St. Sylvester. He served his creator with unmatchable zeal and belonged to many Christian organisations, contributing immensely to the gospel's spread. He trained priests, built churches and renovated dilapidated ones. He was also a community leader whose contributions to the development of his Abatete community have more profound expression in the title of Ochendo Abatete, genuinely conferred on him by the community’s sovereign. He gave many scholarship, offered others job and sent yet others to overseas' training. He had many titles from places other than his Abatete community in recognition of his contributions to their development. He was a member of the Igwe-in-Council of the Abatete ancient Kingdom.

Oranika was a dedicated family man. He married Dr Mrs Uche Josephine Oranika (Iyom Ijele Nwanyi – nee Aniebue), a retired civil servant and businesswoman. The marriage was blessed with seven lovely children and twenty-five grandchildren. The death of Chief G.C Oranika (Ochendo Abatete) has no doubt robbed the bereaved of strength to carry on. However, the belief that he lived a Christian life trumps the fear of losing eternity with the Father, to which His mercy admits all. His remains will be committed to Mother Earth in his home town of Abatete on December 6, 2024. He will be sorely missed. May God grant his soul eternal rest.

6 It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”

6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever! 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.

10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”

13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”

16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! 22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language in all the earth:

“May you prosper greatly!

26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.

“For he is the living God
and he endures forever;
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.
27 He rescues and he saves;
he performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”

28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

The 2024 African Virology Conference (AVC) is set to bring together leading virologists and scientists from academia, public health institutions, and private health organisations to address trends in emerging and re-emerging viruses of concern in Africa.

The conference, themed, “Trends in Emerging and Re-emerging Viruses,” will be held from Monday, 25th to Wednesday, 27th November 2024 at the Exclusive Serene Hotel and Suites, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. It will be officially declared open by the Honorable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.

Speaking about the event, Prof. Maryam Aminu, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee and Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, highlighted key features of the conference.

BEASTS WITH LONGER CANINES AND HORNS 

Usually, wild beasts that are gifted with longer Canines (teeth) and Claws are not also gifted with horns; and those gifted with horns usually do not have longer Canines (teeth) and sharper Claws. So, those with the longer Canines and Claws tend to be carnivorous and tend to fight and kill with their teeth bites and claws, because their power and weapons of destruction are basically their mouth Teeth (Canines) or strong Jaws and their claws. But those with horns tend to be herbivores and tend to fight and kill with their horns and head impacts, because their power and weapons of destruction are basically their horns or strong Skulls.

There are beasts that do not fall in any of these categories since they neither have long Canines nor do they have horns. Such beasts fight with either kicks and stamps like the horses, stallions or giraffes; or fight with boxing like the Kangaroos; or fight with wiping either with tails or with long necks like the giraffes or camels, etc.

Behold those two groups: those who's jaws are their weapons of destruction or victory over the others, and those who's horns are their weapons of victory or destruction over the others. Rarely you find one beast possessing both sides or having both the longer Canines and the Horns — Until this Fourth Beast in Daniel's visions appeared looking like none before it. It's like some Dragons in House of Dragons movie fiction, having dragons with horns and with such longer Canines, so that if the dragons are not fighting with their breath of fire, they would be fighting with their bites of their jaws: but they rarely fight with their horns.

Daniel's desire for the truth of the fourth beast also extended to the desire for the truth of the ten horns on the fourth beast, and the extra horn that grew up afterwards and displaced three existing horns before it. The beast had iron teeth indicating the strongest jaws in biting force according to jaws of steel, and yet the beast possessed such a strong Skull that can comfortably sustain ten horns grown separately with each horn having its root on the skull of the Beast. The Beast was strongest in both Jaws and Skull - Iron teeth + 10 horns.

In natural world, if one animal with horns fights with another sizable animal with Canines, you know by nature that the one with Canines would not only defeat the one Horns, but may kill and eat the one with horn.

But I tell you, that in visions of the Lord, the animal with horns in the visions are stronger than a Beast with Canines and Claws. Example, a Ram with two horns is weaker than a Lion, Bear or Leopard in natural sense, but in a vision that Ram is stronger than a Lion, Bear or Leopard. The reason is because, Horns in Visions means Authorities, Powers or Kingdoms.

Now, imagine this fourth beast with iron Teeth and ten horns versus the Lamb in the book of Revelation, and that Lamb has seven Horns. Or compare the great red Dragon with seven heads and ten horns to the Lamb with one Head and seven Horns; or even compare the beast with seven heads and ten horns to the Lamb with seven horns. 

The Lamb without Canines is far stronger or greater than the Beast or Dragon with Canines and more number of horns. The reason is because, the ten horns are ten Kings or ten Authorities and Powers, of the Beast or Dragon; but the Seven Horns of the Lamb are the Seven Spirits of God. One Spirit of God is already more than ten kings, ten authorities and powers combined; how much more the Seven Spirits of God. David with Spirit of God is greater than Saul as king in authority without the Spirit of God: for greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).

So, it is not also just about the number of horns the creatures possess, but much more about the nature and significance of the Horns. The seven Horns in the Lamb are much greater than the ten horns in the Dragon and Beasts because of what or who those Horns are. So also, the single horn in between the nose of the He-Goat like that of a rhinoceros was greater than the two great horns of the Ram. Or better comparison, a tiny little horn growing up on the None-Alike Horned Beast was already greater than three of the great ten horns, and the three great horns fell for the little horn, because the little horn was of a greater and higher strength, powers and authority, that those existing horns combined could not have withstand. 

In the main Bible verse in Red, the same beast that had skull strong enough to bear ten horns, could not bear that little horn extra without losing three horns to bear the weight and powers that the little horn was emerging with. It had to downsize or fire three horns in order to hire or accommodate the emerging one. And as soon as the little horn emerged, we were no longer hearing the beast devouring, breaking in pieces and stamping all on its path like before, because the little horn had taken over, and all the other horns are loyal to it.

That little horn came with eyes of a man and with mouth that spoke great words, which no iron teeth or jaws were capable of doing. Nevertheless, though the little horn could talk and did spoke great things, none of the things it said was worth Daniel's recording/interest. Daniel desired to know who or what the little horn was, but despised to know whatever it said or was saying.

We have the Seven Horns of the Lamb, who are the Seven Spirits of God: Yes these are the Horns we desire to know and to hear what they are saying to the Seven Churches. Whoever has ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Beasts With Longer Canines And Horns

Lagos, Nigeria – Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has urged German businesses to invest in the state, emphasizing its transformation into a modern economic hub. > Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered an immediate review of the State’s electronic governance platform.

The order was contained in a “Government Special Announcement,” dated 25th November 2024, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor.

According to the statement, the review became necessary following a discovery that the entire e-governance platform of Edo State Government is being run and operated from the backend by unknown non-state actors and no one within the entire Public Service of Edo State has administrative control of the platform.

“While all officials and staff of Ministries, Departments and Agencies are to continue to work on the e-governance platform, pending the outcome of the review, this statement is to also dismiss as untrue, some reports in a section of the social media that the state government has shut down the platform.

“The attention of the Edo State Government has been drawn to a report making the rounds that the Senator Monday Okpebholo-led administration has shut down the e-governance platform initiated by the previous administration. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“It has however been observed that the entire e-governance platform of Edo State Government is being run and operated from the backend by unknown non-state actors and no one within the entire Public Service of Edo State has administrative control of the platform.

“This is considered a serious data security threat as it has placed the entire governance structure of the state at the mercy of non-state actors or so-called consultants. This, therefore, calls for an urgent need to review the process.

“[b][/b]In the light of the foregoing and in order to remedy this clear and present danger, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered the immediate review of the entire e-governance platform with a view to enabling the Edo State government gain total administrative control of the platform and restoring institutional memory of government which the current platform lacks.

“While the review is ongoing, all officials and staff of Ministries, Departments and Agencies are to continue to work on the e-governance platform pending the outcome of ongoing review.”

Data Breach: Gov Okpebholo Orders Urgent Review Of Edo E-governance Platform

> Pensioners in Abia State ended their three-day prayer and fasting on Wednesday, as they asked Governor Alex Otti to honour his electioneering promise of paying them their pension arrears and gratuities.

Speaking under the aegis of Abia Pensioners’ Forum, Okey Kanu said the prayer session was a way of “seeking the intervention of Jesus Christ” and engaging God to prevail on Otti to “restore and pay our arrears of pension and gratuity as promised during the campaign in 2015, 2019, and 2023.”

He said, “On coming into office, this administration purported to have waived or forfeited the said arrears of pension and gratuity, sequel to the illegal memorandum of agreement it purportedly signed with the state NUP exco.

“We believe that our governor is toeing the current line based on wrong advice; hence our continued plea that he should revisit and rescind the same.

“It is a mark of godliness and strength rather than weakness. We are encouraged to agitate for this because this is our government, as pensioners, their families and indeed all Abians sympathetic to our plight played a major role in bringing it to being.

“Our grievance stems from the government’s position that we waived or forfeited these retirement benefits sequel to the said Memorandum of Agreement.

“But at the same time, the government has refused to comply with Paragraph 7(a) of the agreement which stipulates that in case of any dispute arising from the agreement, the parties shall meet to resolve the same by mutual negotiation.

“The government has refused to convene a meeting in this regard.”

He said the meeting was particularly necessary because the state Nigeria Union of Pensioners executive had denied entering into any agreement with the government to forfeit pension arrears and, especially, gratuities.

“The strange position adopted by the government as revealed by the governor during his last media chat on 7/11/2024 is that before the agreement can be revisited, the state NUP must return the money paid to them.

“This pronouncement is vague because it is unclear if the government meant the arrears accumulated by the present administration as paid in March 2024 or any other money paid to the state NUP Exco.

“If the former, it is misconceived because what was paid to pensioners in March 2024 was the arrears owed them as accumulated by the present administration.

“The greater part of the arrears remain untouched; hence our agitation for the same to be paid.

“However, if the latter is the position, then the payment is illegal as it is construed to be a bribe in which case the giver and receiver are liable. This does not in any way concern pensioners,” Kanu said.

The pensioners pleaded with the government to pay the arrears of pension and gratuity as promised, or pay the same by instalments (as done to tertiary institutions in the state) if the government did not have enough funds to pay at once.

Earlier, in his admonition of the pensioners, Pastor Success Obinya of the City Liberation Centre, Aba, prayed to God to step in and bring them on the right path.

AI Innovation And Regulation Drive Begins In Lagos State

Enyinnaya Abaribe, the senator representing Abia south, has claimed that Simon Ekpa, self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), labelled his agitations as content creation.

> Ekpa was arrested last week in Finland and subsequently sent to prison by the district court of Päijät-Häme for “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media”.

Abaribe said Ekpa’s arrest was a welcome development, adding that the secessionist admitted that his actions were staged.

The senator made the claim on Monday while speaking on ‘Politics Today’, a Channels Television programme.

”What it does is that it will tell those people at home who are purveyors of violence, who have been instigated by Simon Ekpa, to now know that he actually said he is just a content creator,” he said.

Abaribe added that Ekpa’s actions were antithetical to what the Igbos stand for.

He said terrorists have leveraged the agitation to perpetrate violent crimes in the south-east.

“And what has happened is that a legitimate quest by the IPOB seeking a non-violent referendum was turned by all these kidnappers because they have found a key because, to average Igbo people, when you say Biafra, you must be doing the right thing,” the senator said.

“Whatever they say they are doing in the south-east is not supported by anybody in the south-east. All you have is a band of criminals.

“Also, our security agencies find it difficult to discern between a criminal and somebody who is saying he is doing agitation. So, every little thing that happens, they would say it is IPOB.”

According to the lawmaker, violence in the region can only be brought to an end when Nnamdi Kanu, the detained IPOB leader, is released.

Abaribe said many of those perpetrating violence with Kanu’s name would not have any reason to continue when he is released.

Nigerian authorities have been demanding the extradition of Ekpa, a dual citizen of Finland and Nigeria, for prosecution.
