Acting SA Police Minister Vows to Arrest Perpetrators of Xenophobic Attacks on Ghanaians
South Africa’s Acting Police Minister has condemned recent xenophobic violence targeting Ghanaian nationals and other foreign residents in Durban’s central business district. Videos circulating online show foreign traders being harassed, prompting hundreds of shops to close over safety fears. The Durban Central Concerned Business Group warned that law and order have collapsed in the CBD. A letter to authorities said businesses remained shut because police and metro officers failed to guarantee protection, undermining constitutional rights to security and trade. In response, the Police Ministry reiterated that the government will not tolerate violence or intimidation. Officers have been instructed to act decisively. Anyone found inciting, supporting, or taking part in xenophobic attacks will be identified, arrested, and brought to court. The minister also called on communities and civil society to work with law enforcement, reject division and restore peace to the city’s trading hubs.
