El Niño, Extreme Heat and Hydration: How Nigerians Can Stay Safe
Extreme heat can make everyday activities harder, especially for people who work outdoors, commute long distances or spend hours in open markets. Changing weather patterns, including El Niño, can affect temperatures and rainfall, so we need to take heat safety seriously. Dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, unusual tiredness, weakness and dark-coloured urine. We should drink safe water regularly instead of waiting until we feel very thirsty. Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, oranges and cucumbers can also support hydration. Where possible, we should reduce strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, wear loose and lightweight clothing, and take breaks in shaded or cooler places. Children, older people and those with health conditions may need extra attention. If someone becomes confused, collapses or develops severe symptoms after spending time in extreme heat, seek urgent medical care. We should also follow official weather and health advisories and check on people around us.
