Muda Yusuf Challenges Kenneth Okonkwo’s Critique of Atiku’s Subsidy Plan

Kenneth Okonkwo appeared on Channels Television to defend Atiku Abubakar’s position on fuel subsidy removal. After his interview, economist Dr. Muda Yusuf joined the programme to examine the figures and separate the economic arguments from the political claims. Yusuf argued that the reform path should not be reversed, although he said the government must improve implementation and provide stronger relief for Nigerians facing hardship. He explained that much of the reported ₦15.8 trillion in subsidy-related savings was distributed to states and local governments, rather than remaining with the Federal Government. He also described the claim that borrowing proves subsidy savings vanished as too simplistic, citing the wider effort to stabilise foreign exchange, restore trade financing and address macroeconomic problems. In my view, the discussion showed the difference between making a political case and scrutinising the underlying economic numbers. Yusuf did not present the reforms as perfect. His position was that the policy should be retained, while the government improves its support for citizens and businesses affected by the changes.
