Members of the All Progressives Congress, Etsako West Chapter in Edo State, on Tuesday, protested the alleged planned return of the impeached deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, to the party.

At 37, Simon Harris becomes the youngest prime minister in Ireland

On Tuesday, April 9, Simon Harris took office as Ireland’s youngest prime minister ever, promising to bring “new energy” to the position.

Leo Varadkar, who abruptly resigned last month for personal and political reasons, is replaced by Harris, 37.

In a ceremony with President Michael D. Higgins, Harris was formally installed after the Irish parliament voted 88 to 69 in favor of him on Tuesday. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Following Varadkar’s resignation, the center-right Fine Gael party held an uncontested election and chose Harris as its leader. However, the youthful politician will soon face important elections and internal pressure to address housing difficulties and anti-immigration sentiment.

Harris told parliament:

“I want to bring new ideas and new energy and, I hope, a new empathy to public life. Time is certainly short, and there’s a lot to do,” Harris added.

Varadkar quit last month saying that at the age of 45 he no longer felt he was the “best person” to lead the country. Varadkar, the youngest prime minister when first elected in 2017, said Tuesday said he “always knew” Harris would fill the top job.

“This has perhaps come a little bit sooner than he might have planned or expected. But I know he will rise to the occasion,” Varadkar said.

“He has the empathy, energy, experience, campaigning skills and political antenna to take us forward.”

Harris joined the youth branch of Fine Gael at the age of 16 and quickly rose through its ranks.

Youth Leaders Demand Commissioner’s Apology To Gov Fubara 

The Rivers State Ethnic Youth Leaders Coalition, have called on the Commissioner for Special Projects, Chief Chukwuemeka Woke to apologize to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, over his alleged uncomplimentary remarks against the current administration in the state.

The youth leaders, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, also called on Governor Fubara to exercise discernment and decisiveness in addressing disloyalty within his cabinet.

The statement, which was signed the group’s chairman, Dr. Legborsi Yamaabana, stated that the interests of the state and its citizens must always take precedence over personal agendas and political machinations.

It reads in part: “The hallowed halls of governance demand a steadfast commitment to the principles of integrity, loyalty, and service to the people. Emeka Woke’s egregious behavior, compounded by his history of resignation followed by an unrepentant return, underscores a dangerous trend of self-interest and disregard for public good.

“We implore the Governor, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara to exercise discernment and decisiveness in addressing disloyalty within his cabinet. The interests of Rivers State and its citizens must always take precedence over personal agendas and political machinations,” the group said.

It further demanded a retraction and apology from the Commissioner without delay to the governor and government of the Rivers State.

“We demand that Emeka Woke retract his egregious remarks without delay and issue a sincere apology to Governor Fubara and the government of Rivers State. His refusal to do so will only magnify his blatant betrayal of the Governor Fubara’s administration, an affront that cannot be overlooked or tolerated,” the group said.

The youth leaders lauded former Rivers State Governor and elder statesman, Dr. Peter Odili, for his unflinching support for the Fubara-led administration and the collective aspirations of Rivers people.

“As the political landscape evolves, let us heed the call for unity, accountability, and dedication to the advancement of Rivers State. Together, we shall navigate the challenges ahead and forge a path towards a brighter, more prosperous future for all,” the youth leaders said.

The Naira recorded a marginal depreciation against the Dollar in the foreign exchange market for the first time since March 2024 amid the decline of FX reserves.

FMDQ data showed that the Naira dropped after months of stability to N1,148.14 per Dollar on Tuesday from N1,136.04 on Monday.

This represents N12 or 1 per cent depreciation compared to the N1,136.04 recorded on Monday.

Similarly, the parallel market depreciated to N1,100 per Dollar in the parallel market, from N1,050 per Dollar on Monday.

The Naira recorded a N50 depreciation against the Dollar in the black market.

The last time the Naira recorded a loss at the foreign exchange market was on March 9, when it dropped to N1627.40 per Dollar.
However, the Naira had recorded a steady appreciation for months amid the Central Bank of Nigeria’s efforts to defend the currency.

To this end, the Naira became the best-performing currency in April, according to Goldman Sachs.

On two occasions in recent months, CBN had sold USD to the Bureau De Change operators at a benchmarked rate, closing the gap between the official and parallel market rates.

Meanwhile, the country’s FX reserves had been depleted to $32.29 billion on April 15, 2024, from $34.45 billion on March 18.

The development comes amid declined crude oil revenue in March.

Nigeria’s crude oil production dropped to 1.23 barrels per day in March from 1.32 bpd in February.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government had vowed to ramp up production to boost revenue in the coming months.

The air in Kano is thick with apprehension as the government of Abba Kabir Yusuf gears up to arraign Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of the state, on charges of financial misappropriation.

Last Tuesday, the ruling New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) and the state government filed charges against Ganduje, his wife, and six others at the Kano State High Court. 

This move comes in the wake of heightened tensions as the NNPP-led administration initiates both a commission of inquiry and legal proceedings to investigate alleged abuses of power during Ganduje's tenure.

Support for or against the impending litigation has dominated political discourse across local radio stations and social media platforms, punctuated by cautionary tones and veiled threats. 

Many residents fear that this political feud could escalate into a full-blown security crisis, given the deep-seated animosity between the opposing factions.

Yakubu Isa, a resident of Hotoro, voiced concerns about the timing of the conflict, emphasizing the need for religious principles to guide governance rather than fueling political vendettas.

Tension In Kano As Ganduje Faces Impending Arraignment On April 17

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has issued a stern warning to local government chairpersons in the state, cautioning those disrespecting him that they are digging their pit and will soon fall into it.

Fubara gave the warning during the commissioning of a Comprehensive Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Ndoni, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state.

The facility was built and donated to the state government by former Governor Peter Odili.

Expressing surprise at the presence of the local government chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni at the event, Fubara criticized certain chairpersons for their absence from state government activities due to former governor Nyesom Wike.

His words: “I am surprised that I saw the local government chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni here. I am very surprised because I know that for a very long time, any event that has to do with the state government, all the local government chairmen, as it were, do not participate. I hope when he leaves here, they are not going to sack him.

“I know you are not loyal to me. Are they not going to sack you? Or when you leave here, you will grant a press interview that it was not you. That it was your shadow.

“Let me say it here: every one of you who thinks he is disrespecting me, you have already dug your pit; you will fall inside it.

“Siminalayi Fubara, like a river, will flow in a direction that there is no resistance. One way or the other, we will get to our destination, and we will go with our people.”
