Lagos Pushes Stricter Safety Standards for High-Rise Buildings and Workers
The Lagos State Government says it is strengthening safety compliance in high-rise residential, commercial and industrial buildings to reduce workplace accidents, fires and building-related fatalities. At a stakeholders’ forum on safe buildings and worker protection, the Lagos State Safety Commission said safety must be considered from design and construction through daily operations and maintenance. It highlighted the need for regular electrical and mechanical inspections, elevator checks, functional fire systems and emergency plans. The commission also called for compulsory safety training and certification for facility managers. It stressed that painters, cleaners, rooftop technicians and contractors working in high-risk areas must be properly protected. Safety and facility-management professionals urged organisations to improve risk management, disaster preparedness and compliance as Lagos continues to develop more high-rise buildings.
