Lagos Cites 3.3m Housing Gap, Considers Monthly Rent Payment Option
Lagos State says it faces a housing deficit of more than 3.3 million homes, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called for housing that is affordable, safe and supported by essential infrastructure. At the 2026 World Habitat Day event in Ikeja, the governor said the state had delivered 10,623 homes since 2019 through budgetary funding and public-private partnerships. He added that more projects are underway, including schemes expected to provide another 1,584 homes. The government said its Rent-to-Own scheme allows first-time buyers to pay a five per cent deposit and spread the balance over 10 years. It also said a proposed tenancy bill would address arbitrary rent increases, illegal charges and tenancy disputes, while monthly and quarterly rent payment options are being considered. Officials stressed that housing delivery must include roads, drainage, water, electricity, transport access and proper physical planning.
