How Dr Ada Igonoh Survived Ebola After Treating Nigeria’s First Confirmed Case
Dr Ada Igonoh was among the health workers exposed while treating Patrick Sawyer, Nigeria’s first confirmed Ebola patient, in Lagos in 2014. She later tested positive and spent 14 days in isolation battling fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and severe dehydration. During treatment, she relied on supportive care, oral rehydration therapy, encouragement from loved ones and determination to recover. She watched colleagues and patients die, including her mentor, Dr Ameyo Adadevoh, before eventually testing negative and reuniting with her family. Her experience remains a powerful reminder of why early detection, isolation, contact tracing and protection for health workers matter. It is especially relevant amid reports of a newly confirmed imported Ebola-related case in the FCT involving the distinct Bundibugyo virus strain.
