Gen. Abubakar: How I Urged Abacha to Break Up His Inner Circle of ‘Bad Influence’ Officers

Gen. Abubakar: How I Urged Abacha to Break Up His Inner Circle of ‘Bad Influence’ Officers

In his new autobiography, General Abdulsalami Abubakar recounts confronting Head of State General Sani Abacha over a powerful group of officers known as his kitchen cabinet. Abubakar says he told Abacha to disband the clique because its members plotted to sideline or retire senior officers and exerted undue influence on government decisions. He also reveals that, despite claims to the contrary, the Provisional Ruling Council did meet. However, key decisions were often pre-arranged by this inner circle before formal sessions. Reflecting on military finances, Abubakar praises Abacha’s strict budgeting but admits surprise at accounts showing funds moved abroad, a strategy reportedly advised by Colonel Gaddafi during looming Western sanctions.

I totally agree – he must've felt duty calling louder than personal safety.

It seems surprising Abacha tolerated such advice—cliques in power rarely let outsiders challenge them without backlash.

I'm not convinced disbanding the so-called kitchen cabinet would have stopped those political schemes entirely.
