Middle East Conflict Halts Vital Aid for Nearly Half a Million Children, Warns Save the Children
The ongoing Middle East conflict is blocking life-saving humanitarian aid for nearly half a million children, according to Save the Children. Since US and Israeli operations against Iran began on February 28, key sea, air, and land routes—including the Strait of Hormuz—have been disrupted. Shipments bound for Sudan, Afghanistan, and Yemen are delayed or stranded, and shipping costs have soared by up to 50 percent. A consignment of medical supplies to Sudan is stuck in Dubai, putting 90 primary health centres at risk of running out of antibiotics, antimalarials, and other essentials. In Afghanistan, nutrition kits for 5,000 children and 1,400 pregnant or breastfeeding women now face a costly reroute by air. Medicines for 5,000 Yemeni children also remain stranded, with land transport likely to double logistics costs. Save the Children is exploring alternate routes but says urgent political action is needed. The NGO calls on all parties to guarantee safe passage for food, medicine, and critical supplies to prevent further deterioration of global humanitarian crises.
