Chinese Investor Enstooled as Development Chief in Ghana, Sparking Debate
Chinese businessman Zheng Xiangming has been enstooled as Hiowe Golaka Noryam Matse Nene Asumahtsu I, a development chieftaincy title in Ghana. The title recognises contributions by his company to agriculture, livestock, forestry and industrial projects, including job creation. Development titles, known as Nkosuohene, may be awarded to contributors regardless of nationality and do not confer traditional governing authority. The installation has triggered mixed reactions online. Supporters cite investment and employment, while critics question the growing influence of foreign investors and compare the situation with hostility sometimes faced by other Africans in Ghana. The debate comes as trade between China and Ghana, and China and Africa more broadly, continues to expand.
