CISLAC Urges Strong Enforcement as Nigeria Introduces New Tobacco Tax Regime
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre has called for transparent revenue collection and tougher enforcement as Nigeria begins a new tobacco tax regime for 2026 to 2028. At a tobacco tax summit in Abuja, the group warned that higher taxes would have limited impact if tax evasion, illicit trade and under-declaration are not properly addressed. It urged credible sanctions and stronger monitoring of tobacco companies. The Federal Ministry of Finance said the regime will progressively increase specific excise tax rates on tobacco products. Officials said the policy is intended to reduce tobacco consumption, especially among young people, while also raising sustainable revenue for government. CISLAC added that the policy's success should be measured by improved public health, reduced smoking-related disease and accountability in the use of tobacco-tax revenue.
