Agbara Nla: The Return Review: Strong Production, but Biblical Questions
We watched Agbara Nla: The Return, Mount Zion Faith Ministries’ remake of the popular 1990s film. Directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Bamiloye, the story follows two believers who travel to Muwonleru village to confront the influence of the herbalist Isawuru. The film stands out for its costumes, set design, lighting, visual effects and acting. Mike Bamiloye delivers a memorable performance as Isawuru, while scenes involving the palace fire, hospital prayer and spiritual confrontations add ambition to the production. The film also balances tense moments with humour. However, we have concerns about some of its theological messages. We question the portrayal of a Christian character becoming demon-possessed, the depiction of speaking in tongues, and the idea of believers hearing frightening voices. In our view, these scenes conflict with biblical teachings on the Holy Spirit, spiritual authority and soundness of mind. Despite these concerns, Agbara Nla: The Return is an engaging and well-made film that deserves an 8/10 rating.
