IRGC Gunboats Open Fire on Two Commercial Ships in Strait of Hormuz
Two IRGC gunboats opened fire on an oil tanker about 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman on April 18. The crew radioed for help and said they had permission to cross the strait. No injuries were reported. Earlier that day, a container ship was hit by an unknown projectile 25 nautical miles northeast of Oman. Some containers were damaged but there were no fires or casualties. Both incidents were reported to a British maritime monitoring agency. India’s External Affairs Ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador in New Delhi to protest attacks on two Indian-flagged vessels. New Delhi urged Iran to allow its ships to pass safely through the strait. The incidents come amid a renewed standoff in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran closed the waterway again after the US Navy began a blockade. Tehran accused the US of “piracy” and said it would maintain strict control.
