Switzerland Suspends Arms Exports to the US Over Iran Conflict to Uphold Neutrality
On 20 March, the Swiss Federal Council reviewed how neutrality applies to exports linked to the Iran conflict. It decided to ban the export of war materiel to any state involved, including the US and Israel. No new licences will be issued while the conflict persists. An interdepartmental expert group will now regularly review existing arms licences and exports of dual-use and controlled goods. They will ensure all shipments comply with Switzerland’s neutrality obligations and current sanctions on Iran. This move underscores Switzerland’s commitment to strict neutrality in international armed conflicts and its careful oversight of sensitive exports.
