Snake Island Communities Seek EFCC Probe Into Alleged ₦500m Nigerdock Payment
A coalition of residents and civil society groups from Igbologun, Igboeseyore and Igbosu communities on Snake Island, Lagos, has accused Nigerdock Nigeria Plc of alleged land encroachment, exclusion from negotiations and failure to implement a 2004 agreement. The group wants the EFCC to investigate the payment and distribution of ₦500 million said to be for the affected communities. The coalition alleged that the payments were made between December 2022 and February 2025 despite disagreements over who had authority to represent the communities. It also questioned the use of a 2022 memorandum of understanding instead of the 2004 agreement during the EFCC investigation. The group further called for a halt to the proposed terminal development pending clarification of land boundaries, ownership and compensation. It is demanding ₦5 billion compensation, improved jobs for indigenes, basic infrastructure and wider community involvement in decisions affecting the area.
