Renovated Kaduna Township Stadium Sparks Debate Over Its Past Use
Ranchers Bees FC was one of Nigeria’s popular top-flight teams in the 1980s. The club, formerly known as DIC Bees, was originally owned by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria before Kaduna State took over its ownership. The Kaduna State Government recently sold the club to Bello Mohammed El-Rufai and former Super Eagles player Sadiq Umar. The government, however, retained ownership of its home ground, now officially called Kaduna Township Stadium, though many residents still call it Ranchers Bees Stadium. The ongoing renovation has triggered political arguments online. Supporters of Governor Uba Sani say the stadium had become a haven for criminal activity and drug use before the work began. Supporters of former governor Nasir El-Rufai argue that the facility was being used for football and other intended activities. The renovated stadium is expected to host professional matches within weeks.
