NLC Prepares Fresh Minimum Wage Talks as Kebbi Governor Pledges Support

The Nigeria Labour Congress says it is preparing to negotiate a nationwide salary increase with the Federal Government and state governments. NLC President Joe Ajaero, represented by Deputy President Audu Titus Amba, said workers need a new minimum wage that reflects rising living costs and worsening economic conditions. At a workers’ summit in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris said his administration would implement any new national minimum wage approved by the Federal Government. He also pledged to support workers’ interests during discussions at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. Idris said Kebbi had implemented a ₦75,000 minimum wage after the previous ₦70,000 national benchmark expired. He added that the state has paid more than ₦16 billion in retirement and death benefits since May 2023. The NLC said it prefers dialogue to confrontation as negotiations on workers’ pay begin.
